If you use westbound I-80 near Waltham Way, plan ahead. Overnight lane reductions and ramp closures begin June 14.

Traffic impacts near USA Parkway are part of an interim project to extend the Waltham Way on-ramp to westbound I-80 and improve traffic merging prior to future widening of I-80.

Beginning the evening of June 14 through early September, drivers will see the following intermittent overnight impacts:

• Waltham Way on-ramp to westbound I-80 closed beginning the week of June 14 through August. The USA Parkway on-ramp to westbound I-80 will remain open as an alternative.
• Westbound I-80 Exit 28 off-ramp to Patrick/Waltham Way intermittently closed overnight through August.
• Westbound I-80 reduced to one lane from 7:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays, with additional weekend lane reductions outside peak travel hours.
• Speeds reduced to 55 mph through the work zone, with periodic reductions to 45 mph during major work operations.

Drivers should allow extra travel time and use caution through the work zone.

The current Waltham Way on-ramp will be extended by approximately 2,200 feet through a public-private partnership between Storey County and Tesla. Storey County is funding eligible project costs through a reimbursement agreement with Tesla.

More than 2,000 vehicles use Waltham Way daily, merging with nearly 50,000 vehicles traveling I-80 each day. The extension will provide additional space for drivers traveling from USA Parkway and Waltham Way toward Reno-Sparks to merge more safely onto the interstate while improving overall traffic flow.

Traffic on this section of I-80 has increased more than 70% over the past decade. As development and employment continue to grow in the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center (TRI-Center), the project will help improve traffic movement ahead of NDOT's planned widening of I-80 between USA Parkway and Vista Boulevard, currently anticipated to begin as early as 2027.

STOREY COUNTY, NV - On June 10, 2026 at approximately 1132 hours, a Storey County Sheriff's Office deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a suspected DUI driver on USA Parkway in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center.

The driver failed to yield to emergency lights and sirens and fled at a high rate of speed, driving erratically and posing an extreme public safety risk. Deputies eventually stopped the vehicle on Britain Drive in a parking lot of a business. The driver was removed from the vehicle, where he advised deputies he had swallowed approximately 6 to 8 grams of Fentanyl after being stopped.

Deputies immediately requested emergency medical services. The driver, Blaze Thomas (age 28 of Carson City, NV), was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Blaze remains in the custody of the Storey County Sheriff's Office and will be booked into the Storey County Detention Facility on multiple charges once he is medically cleared.

The attached video shows a small portion of the incident from the view of one of the responding deputies. No deputies were injured in the incident.
