State Military Reservation, Virginia Beach The official page of the Virginia National Guard State Military Reservation in Virginia Beach, Va. Construction began, and completed, in 1912.

Camp Pendleton was originally purchased on the oceanfront in 1911 for the intent to be a permanent firing point for local National Guard units. The first unit to conduct marksmanship training at Camp Pendleton was in July, 1913. In the past 100 years, Camp Pendleton has continued to grow, transforming into a collective training center. Camp Pendleton provides training facilities for National Guard

Commonwealth ChalleNGe Youth Academy welcomed family members of Class 64 for Family Day this weekend. In addition to spending time with their cadets, family members observed a drill and ceremony demonstration and had the opportunity to meet with CCYA cadre and administrators. Commonwealth ChalleNGe welcomed a couple special guests this week. Military outreach coordinators from Virginia’s senate delegation visited CCYA on Tuesday. Janet Lomax, military outreach coordinator for Sen. Tim Kaine, and Gene L. Garland, military outreach coordinator for Sen. Mark Warner, met with CCYA staff, received an informational briefing on the program’s history, current status and future goals, and heard first-hand from cadets currently attending the program as part of Class 64.

CCYA is structured in a military-style environment, designed to promote academics, attention to detail, time management, and leadership, while promoting self-esteem, confidence and pride. A retirement ceremony was conducted for Sgt. Edward L. Hinton during the SMR staff holiday meal Dec. 6. Hinton, who retired in March 2025, returned from out of state to be recognized. Hinton served a total of 29 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and the Army National Guard, including at SMR from November 2017-March 2025.
