The City of Virginia Beach was recently recognized by Esri at its User Conference with a Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award for advancements in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to strengthen the City’s emergency management and mitigation capabilities.

These advancements reflect a collaborative effort between the Virginia Beach Department of Emergency Management, Department of Information Technology/GIS, and the Virginia Beach Fire Department to better use data and technology in support of preparedness, response, mitigation, and recovery.

The enhanced GIS applications will improve our ability to plan for and manage large-scale planned events, respond to no-notice emergencies, assess community risks, support natural disaster operations, and document critical information before, during, and after an incident.
