VFW Honors National Black History Month

The VFW takes the opportunity to celebrate Black Americans’ legacy of valor and contributions to the nation

KANSAS CITY, Mo., (Jan. 30, 2026) — The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is proud to join the nation in honoring the profound contributions, resiliency and patriotism of Black American service members, veterans and their families during the month of February, National Black History Month.

While initially observed as a weeklong commemoration, it was President Gerald Ford who, in 1976, issued the first official observance and the establishment of Black History Month.

Dating back to the birth of our nation, Black Americans have served in every conflict, often defending freedoms that they were not fully afforded at home. From the courageous Buffalo Soldiers and the pioneering Tuskegee Airmen to the men and women currently serving today, their fight for democracy has helped fundamentally shape the strength of the U.S. Armed Forces.

This February, we encourage all citizens to move beyond simple observation by learning the stories of heroes like Doris Miller, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion and the countless unsung Black service members who have stood the watch. The more than 1.3 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary salute the indelible legacy of Black Americans in uniform, and we honor their bravery and continued service which helps to secure our way of life.

Highway Safety partner,

It's time for the biggest game of the year! As fans gather together with excitement and cheer, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles wants to remind everyone to celebrate responsibly during this year's 60th Super Bowl event on Sunday, February 8. Planning ahead for a safe and sober ride home should be your top priority before celebrating or mourning your favorite team's fate. Be sure to have a safe and sober ride home, no matter where you watch the game.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) markets the "Fans Don't Let Fans Drive Drunk" message during Super Bowl weekend, which serves as a reminder to drivers about the dangers and consequences of alcohol impaired driving. DMV's Highway Safety Office encourages law enforcement agencies to support this initiative through high-visibility enforcement to help curb drunk driving.

We encourage our partners to share the following resources with their communities to remind everyone to celebrate responsibly.

Our Story

General Douglas MacArthur Memorial VFW Post 392

HISTORY OF THE BUDDY POPPY

From its inception, the Buddy Poppy Program has helped the VFW live up to its motto, "to honor the dead by helping the living." The Buddy Poppy - small red flower symbolic of the blood shed in World War I by millions of Allied soldiers in defense of freedom - was originally sold to provide relief for the people of war devastated France. Later, its sale directly benefited thousands of disabled and down-and-out American veterans.

The poppy program actually got its start on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Shortly after World War I, Madame E. Guerin, founder of the American and French Children's League, became concerned that the free world was "forgetting too soon those sleeping in Flanders Fields."
