On Wednesday, April 1, at 11:44 p.m., the Vinton Fire Department was dispatched by Benton County, Iowa Sheriff's Office Dispatch to a reported structure fire at a private residence in the 700 block of West 8th Street.

Vinton Fire responded with Chief Staab, Assistant Chief Wood, Engines 719 and 711, and Ladder 707, for a total response of 16 personnel. The first units arrived on scene at 11:48
p.m.

Upon arrival, crews found the residence fully involved, with fire extending throughout the interior of the structure. All three occupants had safely exited the residence prior to fire
department arrival. Two interior crews made entry and initiated fire attack; however, interior operations were later limited due to significant structural compromise, including unsafe
floor conditions.

Operations transitioned to exterior fire suppression and overhaul. Firefighting efforts were complicated by the home’s early-1900s balloon-frame construction with lath-and-plaster walls, which allowed fire to spread through concealed spaces and attic areas, requiring extensive overhaul to fully extinguish remaining hotspots. Additionally, the steel-sheeted roof contributed to extreme heat conditions and further complicated ventilation and overhaul
operations.

The Vinton Fire Department remained on scene until 3:43 a.m. No injuries to fire department personnel were reported. The residence and its contents are considered a total loss. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.Look

The Vinton Fire Department was assisted on scene by Garrison Emergency Services for mutual aid, North Benton Ambulance for firefighter rehabilitation, and the Vinton Police Department for traffic control, scene safety, and bystander management.

As you make your plans for the upcoming weekend, please DO NOT pencil in any outdoor burning. The US National Weather Service Quad Cities Iowa/Illinois, has issued a Red Flag warning through 9pm Saturday for Benton County. A Red Flag warning means high-risk for fire with strong winds and low humidity, leading to quick drying of vegetation (which is already dry) and the high potential for a fire to spread uncontrolled. We think it goes without saying to avoid burning brush, grass or trash outside tomorrow, but as fire departments around Benton County would attest after the last few weeks, someone will still try it...

INSTEAD why don't you plan on traveling up the Mountain to the Cedar-Mt. Auburn Fire Department tomorrow from 7-10am for their Pancake Breakfast fundraiser...and if that isn't enough, and you want to burn Sunday (which isn't in the warning but still similar conditions with strong south winds), then head over to Urbana to the Urbana-Polk Twp Fire Department for their pancake breakfast from 8am to 11am. Not only do these options support great mutual aid partners of VFD, but they are also a much safer choice than trying to outsmart nature with fire and endangering the lives and property of your fellow community members.

If you manage to start a fire while eating pancakes and prove us wrong....then we are speechless, other than at least you will be in another Fire District than ours :D

This is it! The day we've been preparing for....the day you don't have to make supper...the day we hit 70+ degrees a few days after being below zero....the day you meet Caleb Stieferman!

Caleb grew up between Jesup and Independence but spent much time in the great outdoors camping at Wildcat Bluff or Benton City and boating on the Cedar River, so he wasn't a stranger to the Vinton area. Life brought Caleb a job with Benton County Secondary Roads, which lead to moving into Vinton formally. Since he was younger, Caleb has had many friends (including the very missed Jimmy Kuhn of Cedar-Mt. Auburn Fire) involved in the fire service, so when he settled into Vinton, the decision was already made.

In his spare time, Caleb still enjoys camping and boating on the river as well as riding his motorcycle on days like this....but thankfully he will be in the serving line making sure you all are well fed. Speaking of spare time or the lack thereof, Caleb and Ella welcomed the newest member of the VFD family on March 8: Willow Rae! Congrats to Caleb and Ella on the addition of Willow and we can clearly see why Caleb has "never been happier!"

Come welcome Caleb to the Vinton community and enjoy a fantastic meal from 4 to 7 pm at the Fire Station for our 2026 VFD Spring Fish Fry Fundraiser! Come hungry and enjoy the beautiful evening off from cooking!

For this week's Fun Friday introduction to a new member of VFD as a shameless plug to come to our 2026 VFD Spring Fish Fry Fundraiser on March 20th, we move from an East Coast import to a locally-raised one in Henry "Hank" Bratten!

Hank started life in Garrison, but thankfully (just kidding Garrison Emergency Services) in 1999 moved east to Vinton, where he decided as a sophomore at Vinton Shellsburg Community Schools that serving on VFD would be a life goal. However, sometimes life takes a while to make childhood dreams a reality. Hank left Vinton to play baseball at Ellsworth Community College, then continued at Mount Mercy University for a Business Administration degree. A long-time Vinton resident, it wasn't until a job change opened the door for Hank to finally live out the dream of being part of VFD when he took on the role of Administrator for the Cedar Valley Ranch east of Vinton. He joined VFD in October of 2025.
,
Hank lives in Vinton with his wife Alyssa and 3 kids: Jayce, Oaklee, and Laiklee. Away from work, Hank spends his time at dance recitals and competitions as a hard-core dance Dad, coaching his kids' sports teams, camping, fishing, riding bikes, kayaking, and anything else the great outdoors offers the Bratten family. He has moved on from the bearded days to cultivating a superb mustache. We also discovered he is, in fact, not a fan of matching Christmas outfits....

Please give a warm welcome to Hank as you make your way through the serving line from 4pm to 7pm on Friday March 20th while getting a heaping plate of delicious food! If you find out any cool facts about Hank, let us know, as we have barely seen him! Hank jumped right into taking Firefighter 1 and Haz-Mat Operations classes this fall and continues currently 2 nights per week for 5 months. All members of VFD proudly hold this certification at a minimum, and we wish the best for Hank as he nears the end of classes and final testing!

Leading up to our 2026 VFD Spring Fish Fry Fundraiser, we wanted to introduce the community to some of our newer members at VFD - the friendly faces that will greet you and feed you from 4-7 pm on March 20th!

First off is Kimmy Lyngdal! Kimmy wins the award for the farthest distance traveled just to join VFD (kidding...she says it was for work)! Hailing from Woodbridge, Connecticut, where she served for 9 yrs as a Junior and Firefighter on the Woodbridge Volunteer Fire Department alongside her father Ted Pocwierz. Kimmy joined Vinton Fire in November 2024.

Kimmy works at NuMotion in Hiawatha as a mobility and adaptive equipment specialist and lives in Vinton with her husband, Jake. Kimmy and Jake welcomed the smallest member of the VFD family on Halloween: baby boy Cooper! Cooper joins his four-legged older brother, Marvel, in cheering on the Green Bay Packers alongside Dad; however, Kimmy's loyalties lie with the Philadelphia Eagles. In her spare time (is there any as a new parent?) Kimmy enjoys playing with Marvel and video gaming.

Make sure to give Kimmy a warm welcome to Vinton on your way through the serving line Friday, March 20th!

🔥 Training Night Update! 🔥

This month, VFD is focusing on Firefighter Down / MAYDAY and Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) skills through both classroom instruction and hands-on evolutions, preparing our members to respond quickly when one of our own needs help the most. A RIT is a dedicated team on scene whose sole job is to rescue a firefighter in trouble.

Last night’s training included:
• MAYDAY activation and radio communications with the Incident Commander
• Firefighter drags and removals with 1 to 3 rescuers
• SCBA regulator replacement and topping off air using the RIT pack
• Moving a downed firefighter safely up and down stairs

While we hope to never need these skills, we train to be ready. Our top priority is that every firefighter goes home safely after every call.

Great job to everyone who came out and put in the work it takes to be part of Vinton Fire!

On Wednesday, December 24, 2025, at 08:16 pm, the Vinton Fire Department was requested by the Benton County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch to a private residence in the 1000 block of West 8th Street to a working structure fire reported to 911 by a neighbor.

Vinton Fire responded to the scene with both command units (Chief Staab and Assistant Chief Wood), both city engines 719 and 711, and ladder truck 707 with a total response of 17 members with the first units arriving on scene at 08:23 pm.

Upon arrival, it was found that the fire had engulfed the east and north interior rooms of the residence and had self-ventilated through windows in the residence. Entry was made into the structure, and the working fire was quickly extinguished. Overhaul operations were more time-consuming secondary to the fire’s extension into multiple attic spaces present between additions and the original structure. Vinton Fire was on-scene until 10:34 pm and no injuries were reported to firefighting personnel.

No human occupants were home at the time of the fire, and despite the fire’s extension into only two rooms of the home, the remainder was affected by smoke damage with a significant loss of contents secondary to this. A nearby detached garage was unaffected by the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.

Vinton Fire was assisted on scene by North Benton Ambulance for rehabilitation operations and the Vinton Police Department with traffic control, scene safety, and management of bystanders. Benton Emergency Management was also present for resource allocation as well as coordination for care of the residents affected by the loss of their home and possessions.

The Vinton Fire Department extends its condolences to the family affected by this fire and commends the community of Vinton for its quick and generous response to support this family during the Christmas season.

See that look on Charlie Garwood's face? Deep down in his thoughts he is thinking: "Boy, I'd much rather have gone fishing for real fish instead of fire trucks today....they taste better.....much easier to clean too......".

Sadly Charlie was not given any fish for his efforts retreiving F717 from an unexpected soft spot on a controlled CRP burn....but you can be rewarded next Friday, April 11 at our Vinton Fire Spring Fish Fry Fundraiser 2025 simply by stopping at the fire station, smiling and offering a freewill donation between 4-7 pm....even better: no mud required!!

Please don't suffer like Charlie....come get some real fish!

We're all tired so we will let our friends to the west speak for us all with this post! HOWEVER our only comment was that there was an OBSCENE amount of onlookers on the roads today that had absolutely NO business being out there. Conditions were incredibly dangerous as it was then we have gravel roads full of people gawking and driving slow. If you have ever driven a heavy truck full of water on a soft gravel road you'll appreciate the danger these drivers placed our crews in today as they had to navigate around cars let alone visibility issues with dust. Thanks to law enforcement for assisting as they were able and bottom line if you are that curious about what is burning let us know, every department here today is accepting applications. Be respectful folks....every call we go on is someone's worst day...not your entertainment.
