TORNADO AND SEVERE WEATHER PREPERATION
A watch means a tornado/severe weather is possible, while a warning means a tornado/severe weather is happening or about to happen. Experts say to seek shelter immediately when a tornado warning is issued. Get off the road and seek shelter, but avoid highway overpasses. Preparation for a tornado involves identifying a safe shelter, assembling emergency supplies, establishing the family communications plan, and practicing drills to ensure safety before, during, and after a storm.
BEFORE A TORNADO:
KNOWING THE SIGNS AND WARNINGS:
Tornadoes can strike quickly. Watch for dark skies, greenish skies, rotating wall clouds, a loud continuous roar, sudden calm, hail, or flying debris. Understand the difference between a tornado watch and a warning, and stay tuned to your local radio, TV, weather radio, or mobile alerts for updates.
CREATE A FAMILY COMMUNICATION PLAN:
Designate an out-of-town contact, establish a meeting place, and ensure all family members know how to reach each other. Keep emergency numbers in a waterproof, accessible location.
PREPARE EMERGENCY SUPPLIES:
Stock a tornado preparedness kit with water, non-perishable food, first aid supplies, flashlights, batteries, medications, and important documents. Include items for pets and consider backup power for medical devices.
PRACTICE TORNADO DRILLS:
Conduct regular drills so everyone knows how to move quickly to the safe location, including pets if possible, and ensure children understand the plan.
DURING A TORNADO:
SEEK SHELTER IMMEDIATELY:
If a warning is issued or you suspect a tornado, go to your safe location, stay away from windows, doors, and outside walls. Protect your head and neck with your arms or a sturdy object. Stay informed. Continue listening to local news, weather radio, or mobile alerts for updates until the tornado has passed. Remain in shelter until safe. Do not enter damaged buildings until authorities confirm it is safe. Watch for debris down power lines and gas leaks.
By following these steps, preparing in advance, knowing the signs, establishing safe shelter, and practicing drills, you can significantly increase your safety and the safety of your loved ones during a tornado
