๐ช๐ Tuesday Night Drill โ Through the Lock Training ๐๐ช
Last Tuesday evening, the members of Panther Road Fire Co. - Vineland Station 5 participated in a Through the Lock training program expertly presented by Vineland Fire Department Career Captain Ken DiChino.
When most people think of firefighters gaining access to a building during an emergency, they picture firefighters forcing a door open. While forcible entry is an essential firefighting skill, it isn't always the best solution.
Through the Lock training teaches firefighters how to gain entry into locked buildings, businesses, and rooms quickly, safely, and with as little damage as possible. Imagine a report of smoke coming from a business after hours, an elderly resident who has fallen and cannot get to the door, or a child locked inside a room. In situations like these, firefighters often need immediate access, but destroying a door may not be necessary.
During the training, members learned:
๐ How different types of locks and doors operate
๐ How to identify the quickest and safest method of entry
๐ How to use specialized tools to unlock doors with minimal damage
๐ When traditional forcible entry is necessary and when a less destructive method is more appropriate
๐ How to maintain the security of a building after the emergency has been resolved
The goal of Through the Lock techniques is simple: reach those in need faster, improve firefighter safety, reduce damage to homes and businesses, and save property owners the cost and inconvenience of replacing doors and locks whenever possible.
Training like this helps ensure our firefighters are prepared with the right skills and the right tools for every situation they encounter.
A special thank you to Captain Ken DiChino for sharing his knowledge and expertise with our members.
