๐Ÿ”๐Ÿš’ Land Search & Rescue Response ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ”

On Saturday, June 7th, members of Panther Road Fire Company - Vineland Station 5 responded as part of the Cumberland County Land Search and Rescue Team to assist the Salem County Sheriff's Office with a search for a missing female in Pilesgrove Township.

Our LandSAR members operated on scene for more than three hours alongside personnel from Upper Deerfield Fire Company #3, Bridgeton Fire Department, Downe Township Fire/Rescue and Dive Team, Lawrence Township EMS, Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company, Hopewell-Stow Creek Fire Company, and other assisting agencies.

Following an extensive search effort involving multiple agencies and specialized search resources, the missing individual was successfully located and transported for medical care.

Search and Rescue operations require teamwork, communication, patience, and a tremendous amount of dedication from all involved. We are proud of our members who continue to train and maintain the specialized skills necessary to assist in these critical incidents.

A great outcome made possible through the cooperation and professionalism of everyone involved.

๐Ÿšช๐Ÿš’ Tuesday Night Drill โ€“ Through the Lock Training ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿšช

Last Tuesday evening, the members of Panther Road Fire Co. - Vineland Station 5 participated in a Through the Lock training program expertly presented by Vineland Fire Department Career Captain Ken DiChino.

When most people think of firefighters gaining access to a building during an emergency, they picture firefighters forcing a door open. While forcible entry is an essential firefighting skill, it isn't always the best solution.

Through the Lock training teaches firefighters how to gain entry into locked buildings, businesses, and rooms quickly, safely, and with as little damage as possible. Imagine a report of smoke coming from a business after hours, an elderly resident who has fallen and cannot get to the door, or a child locked inside a room. In situations like these, firefighters often need immediate access, but destroying a door may not be necessary.

During the training, members learned:

๐Ÿ”‘ How different types of locks and doors operate

๐Ÿ”‘ How to identify the quickest and safest method of entry

๐Ÿ”‘ How to use specialized tools to unlock doors with minimal damage

๐Ÿ”‘ When traditional forcible entry is necessary and when a less destructive method is more appropriate

๐Ÿ”‘ How to maintain the security of a building after the emergency has been resolved

The goal of Through the Lock techniques is simple: reach those in need faster, improve firefighter safety, reduce damage to homes and businesses, and save property owners the cost and inconvenience of replacing doors and locks whenever possible.

Training like this helps ensure our firefighters are prepared with the right skills and the right tools for every situation they encounter.

A special thank you to Captain Ken DiChino for sharing his knowledge and expertise with our members.

๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ’™ Another Busy Week for the Panthers ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿš’

It was another active and productive week for the members of Panther Road Fire Company - Vineland Station 5!

On May 20th, our members were proud to assist St. Mary School during their โ€œLaps for Learningโ€ event. Students spent the day walking, running, and jogging to raise funds for their school, and on a hot day like that, there was only one thing left to do โ€” cool everyone off! ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ’ฆ

Our crews were happy to stop by and give the students a hose down while they enjoyed fruit, water ice, and a fun-filled afternoon. We always enjoy opportunities to connect with the youth in our community and help make events like this even more memorable.

On Tuesday night, members gathered for our weekly Drill Night focusing on two critical water supply operations. Because portions of our district, and neighboring municipalities we provide mutual aid to, do not have municipal hydrant systems, our firefighters must be prepared to establish alternative water supplies during emergencies.

Two separate training sites were utilized during the drill:

๐Ÿš’ Union Road โ€“ Flaim Farms
Members trained on establishing a water supply using an agricultural irrigation system. Crews utilized a custom appliance designed and built by Station 5 members specifically for this purpose. The Engine 2 Duty Crew also joined Station 5 members for the training.

๐Ÿš’ Menantico Road Stream Site
Members practiced setting up a fill site utilizing a natural water source. Firefighters drafted water from the stream and filled apparatus, reinforcing the essential skills needed to protect areas without hydrant service.

Whether serving the community at local events or sharpening our firefighting skills through hands-on training, the members of Station 5 continue working hard to stay prepared for whatever comes next.

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿš’ Live Fire Training at Gloucester County Fire Academy ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ”ฅ

This past Saturday, the members of Panther Road Fire Company - Vineland Station 5 participated in our annual live fire training at the Gloucester County Fire Academy 3-Story Burn Building.

Joining the Panthers for the training were Jesse Akers from South Vineland Fire Company, Training Officer, Battalion Chief Terry McManus, and Chief of Department Mark Cifaloglio of the Vineland Fire Department.

Crews took part in several realistic fireground evolutions designed to sharpen critical firefighting skills under live fire conditions. One hose team advanced a handline to the second floor to perform fire attack, while another crew simultaneously conducted a primary search for victims on the first floor.

While interior crews operated inside the structure, additional members staffed Tender 5 as the attack apparatusโ€”connecting to a hydrant, establishing a water supply, and pumping water to the hose teams operating inside the building.

Members also participated in a thermal layering and flashover simulator, experiencing temperatures well over 1,000 degrees. Thermal layering occurs when heat and smoke separate into layers inside a burning structure, with the hottest gases collecting overhead. Firefighters are trained to recognize these dangerous conditions because they can rapidly lead to a flashoverโ€”the near-simultaneous ignition of all combustible materials within a room due to extreme heat.

The flashover simulator provides firefighters with a controlled environment to observe fire behavior, understand warning signs, and learn how changing conditions inside a structure can become life-threatening in seconds.

Training at Gloucester Countyโ€™s Burn Building gives our members the opportunity to experience different types of live burn scenarios that cannot be replicated during routine drills. The Panthers performed exceptionally well and took full advantage of the opportunity to continue honing their skills and improving their readiness for real-world emergencies.

Prepared. Trained. Ready.
