Let's talk about Velvet Ants...actually wasps?

Velvet ants typically start showing up during the heat of the summer in Knox County. The ones we have seen are shades of black and red but they can also have orange or brown colors. The interesting thing about them is they are not an ant they are actually a wasp. The males do not sting but the female can so its advisable to not touch them. They typically are bashful and if they sense your presence will run away. Velvet ants are not pests and will not harm humans unless you handle them. So if you see one enjoy its pretty colors but avoid touching them.
