Ville Platte City Council - 6-9-26
VILLE PLATTE — The Ville Platte City Council met Tuesday evening and addressed several items involving city finances, public safety, property improvements, and upcoming community projects.
The council scheduled a public hearing for June 29th at 4:30 p.m. to consider amendments to the 2025-2026 budget and adoption of the 2026-2027 budget.
An ordinance regarding the sale of 109 East Main Street was introduced. During the meeting, Cordez Ceasar addressed the council and expressed interest in purchasing the property.
The council also heard from Candace Dominick regarding 22 properties proposed for demolition under the city’s Unsafe Structure Program. Council members approved moving forward with the request.
City departments also provided updates on recent activity. The Ville Platte Fire Department reported responding to 13 incidents within the city and three in the district during May. The department installed eight smoke alarms as part of its year-long Red Cross program, continues fire hydrant testing and inspections on the north side of the city, and currently has 14 participants in its first volunteer certification program.
The Ville Platte Police Department reported 448 calls for service in May, along with 10 citations issued and 11 arrests, including five felony arrests.
Council members also welcomed Annie Dillard with Acadian Ambulance, who introduced herself as the area supervisor. She provided an update on ambulance calls and response times, saying the company continues working to improve service and will provide regular updates to the council moving forward.
The city also announced several new investments and projects. Ville Platte has received a $1,500 grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities to support the third annual Independence Day Celebration on Friday, July 3rd, 2026, at the Northside Civic Center Grand Pavilion.
The event begins at 5 p.m. and will feature performances by DJ Chill Will, Geno Delafose and French Rockin’ Boogie, David Sylvester, and Roi “Chip” Anthony. KVPI will broadcast live from the event, which will include family activities, food vendors, and fireworks.
The city was also awarded a $75,000 grant through the Delta Regional Authority for renovations to the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Building. Improvements will include upgraded restrooms, redesigned interior space for meetings and programs, and exterior enhancements to improve accessibility and visibility.
Officials are also pursuing additional funding through the Federal Recreational Trails Grant Program to enhance Gloria Frank Hope Park with new trailhead amenities designed to improve safety, accessibility, and the overall experience for park visitors.
The council also approved up to $1.75 million in Limited Tax Revenue Bonds for the construction of the new fire station, to be financed over 15 years and secured by the city’s constitutional ad valorem property tax. Evangeline Bank and Trust Company will provide $1.313 million at an interest rate of 4.65 percent, while the Louisiana Public Facilities Authority Bond Program will provide $437,000 at a rate of 2.325 percent.
City leaders say the projects and investments reflect continued progress and a commitment to improving services, infrastructure, and opportunities for the Ville Platte community.
