Memorial Day is more than the beginning of summer or a long weekend. It is a day of remembrance for the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy today and their legacy continues to inspire generations of Americans.

Across our nation, flags will fly, families will gather, and communities will pause to honor those who never made it home. Behind every name etched on a memorial is a story of courage, duty, and selfless service.

At the Maries County Sheriff’s Office, we proudly remember the fallen and extend our deepest gratitude to the families who carry that sacrifice every day.

As you spend time with family and friends this Memorial Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of the holiday and remember those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

🇺🇸 Never Forgotten. Always Honored. 🇺🇸

We are proud to congratulate the Vienna community on being officially recognized as a Missouri Blue Shield City for 2026!

This designation reflects Vienna’s continued commitment to supporting law enforcement, strengthening public safety partnerships, and investing in a safer future for our citizens and visitors alike.

Earlier this year, Maries County was also honored to receive Blue Shield recognition as a Year 2 participant, and we are excited to now see the City of Vienna join this important statewide initiative.

The Missouri Blue Shield Program continues to grow across the state, recognizing communities that prioritize collaboration between citizens, local government, and law enforcement agencies. Seeing both Vienna and Maries County represented is something our entire community can be proud of.

Congratulations to the City of Vienna, community leaders, and everyone who played a role in achieving this designation. We look forward to continuing to build strong partnerships and enhancing public safety throughout Maries County.

Over the last two days, deputies with the Maries County Sheriff’s Office traveled to the Missouri River to conduct joint marine operations training with the Osage County Sheriff's Office.

During this training, deputies participated in a variety of water-based law enforcement drills designed to strengthen the skills needed for safe and effective operations on Missouri waterways. Training scenarios included man overboard recovery, vessel approaches, boat recovery operations, navigation in hazardous conditions, and other river rescue and enforcement situations.

The Missouri River was specifically chosen for this training due to its swift current, variety of boat traffic, and currently large amounts of floating debris. These challenging conditions provide realistic scenarios that first responders may encounter during actual emergency incidents and river rescue operations.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Sheriff Michael Bonham and the Osage County Sheriff’s Office for allowing our deputies the opportunity to train alongside their personnel.

Training and cooperation between neighboring law enforcement agencies is extremely valuable. Working together helps build strong partnerships, improves communication during emergencies, and ensures our agencies are better prepared to respond when our communities need us most.

🌊 River Mile Marker Project Update 🌊

Today Maries County Deputy Kevin Green and I, installed the first 11 river mile markers along the Gasconade River here in Maries County. This marks the beginning of an important safety initiative for our community and visitors.

We are working to have the remaining mile markers installed soon, in anticipation of the upcoming busy river season.

These markers are more than just signs they are a critical tool for river safety. In an emergency, being able to tell dispatchers your exact location using a mile marker can significantly reduce response times and help first responders get to you faster when every second counts.

👀 If you’re out on the river this weekend, be on the lookout for a bright red sign with white numbers, that’s your mile marker.

You can also pull up Maries County GIS and activate the mile marker layer to see all Gasconade River mile markers and where each physical marker is located. This can be a helpful tool to familiarize yourself with the system before you head out.

I will be sharing photos from today’s installation to give everyone a look at the progress being made.

We appreciate the support from our community and property owners as we continue working to make the Gasconade River safer for everyone.

This week, we recognize and honor National Police Week which started in 1962 by President Kennedy as a time to remember the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, and to show our continued support for those who serve today.

Here in Maries County, we pause to remember our own, Sheriff Roy Bassett, the Maries County Sheriff, gave his life in the line of duty while protecting the citizens of this county.

Law enforcement officers face challenges and dangers every day, often without recognition, but always with a commitment to protect and serve their communities. We especially honor those who gave everything in that service. Sheriff Bassett’s sacrifice will never be forgotten, and his legacy lives on through those who continue to serve and protect today.

To all deputies in our county and others and all law enforcement professionals across the nation ,past and present, thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your choice to serve and protect our communities.

Today we take a moment to recognize the strength, compassion, and steady presence of the mothers in our lives and in our community.

To the moms who show up every day whether at home, at work, or serving others thank you for the countless ways you make a difference. Your dedication, patience, and love do not go unnoticed.

We also want to acknowledge the mothers within our own agency family, as well as those who support our officers from behind the scenes. Your role is invaluable.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mothers out there. We hope today brings you the appreciation you deserve.

On May 1, 2026, members of the Maries County Sheriff’s Office were proud to take part in Officer Hinson’s Annual Safety Day for Maries R2 Elementary students!

We appreciate the opportunity to join alongside so many great partners, including Phelps Health, Gasconade County Sheriff’s Office, Osage County Sheriff’s Office, Belle Fire, Osage Ambulance District, Bland Police Department, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Events like this are a great way to connect with our community and help young students better understand the role of first responders.

Representing our agency, Detective Sergeant Brandon McDougal, Deputy Kevin Green, and Detention Officer Dennis Jasper (along with K9 Ninja) spent the day engaging with students and sharing what we do to keep our community safe. Detective McDougal showcased our sheriff’s office boat and provided demonstrations of our drone operations, giving students a closer look at some of the tools we use in the field.

K9 Ninja was a big hit, and Officer Jasper explained Ninja’s tracking abilities and the critical role K9 units play in law enforcement operations.

It was a great day of learning, interaction, and community partnership. Thank you to Officer Hinson for organizing this event and to all the agencies who participated. Most importantly, thank you to the students for their enthusiasm and curiosity we had a great time with you all!

This week, we proudly recognize National Corrections Officers Week and the dedicated men and women who serve inside our detention facility.

Corrections work is often behind the scenes, but it is critical to the safety, security, and operation of our entire justice system. Our detention officers carry out demanding responsibilities each day with professionalism, integrity, and commitment.

This past weekend, Keith Hoskins with the National Institute for Jail Operations visited Maries County and presented a plaque honoring the contributions of our jail staff to the field of corrections. We are especially proud to have Detention Officer Jerome Hightower accept this recognition on behalf of the Maries County Sheriff’s Office.

We thank all of our detention officers for their hard work, dedication, and the vital role they play every single day.
