Second Story provides safe havens and opportunities to grow and thrive to youth experiencing homelessness and youth and families in crisis

Our vision is of a community in which all young people are safe, live in a nurturing environment and have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Do you or your child need hours for Student Service Learning (SSL) Requirements?

While youth volunteers can’t work directly with the young people in our programs, there are still plenty of opportunities to get involved! You can assist with tasks such as transporting donations, setting up food distribution events, or helping promote our work on social media. We have various options for volunteers.

We are so grateful to Cloverleaf Equine Center for partnering with us to provide horseback riding field trips to our teens.

The Teen Center is a trusted place where young people can share meals, pursue their education and dreams, connect with caring adults when their parents aren’t available, and find a sense of belonging.

Community partners like Cloverleaf Equine Center play a crucial role by providing our youth with access to field trips, giving them opportunities to explore new environments, and build confidence together.

If you know a young person who is couch-surfing, dealing with an unsafe home environment, or has nowhere to sleep tonight, please let them know they don’t have to carry this alone.

Second Story for Teens in Crisis provides a safe emergency home for up to 3 weeks, counseling, and school support.

You never know whose life might change just because this post pops up on their feed or because you saved this number in your phone.

Thank you so much to FitzGerald Financial Group for standing with us at the Beacon of Hope Breakfast! Community partners and sponsors like you make it possible for us to show up for local youth when they need it most.

A key highlight of our 2026 Beacon of Hope Breakfast was sharing the incredible journey of Celebrity Chef Chauncy Yarngo

Long before becoming an author and entrepreneur who has cooked for icons like Barack Obama and Janet Jackson, Chauncy walked into the Second Story Teen Center.

That space gave him homework help, mentorship, and a place where he truly belonged. It’s where he discovered his passion for cooking and built the confidence to pursue it.

As a community, we have the power to hold doors open for young people. Chef Chauncy’s story shows us the power of holding the door open.

Help us keep the door open for the next generation of youth!

What an unforgettable morning at the 2026 Beacon of Hope Breakfast last week!🌟

To everyone who joined us, supported us, and opened doors for youth in crisis - thank you. Deepest thanks as well to our generous sponsors, community partners, volunteers, and state and county leaders.

We have an opportunity to hold a door open. A door to safety. A door to stability.

The breakfast may be over, but the work continues. If you were inspired or couldn't make it in person, you can still make a life-changing difference for youth in Northern Virginia: https://buff.ly/LJN69nw

Youth homelessness often looks different than what people expect. It can be hidden, complicated, and underreported. Young people need more than a safe place to stay; they need trusted adults who recognize what they're going through and can help them build a path toward independent living. For 54 years, Second Story has been that resource for our community, stepping into the hidden stories that require creativity, compassion, and experience. We help young people who might be couch surfing while attending high school, holding down jobs, and carrying unimaginable stress behind closed doors, or those experiencing another crisis.

If you are unable to attend or if you're ready to show your support now, consider making a donation: https://buff.ly/LJN69nw

All donations go directly to our programs so we can hold the door open for hope for local youth and families in need.
