Trick-or-treat season is officially here! 🎃 Between the excited dashes from porch to porch and all the cool costumes, things can get pretty busy out on the streets.

To help make sure everyone has a fun, safe night, here are a few easy tips to keep in mind before heading out:

🔦 Light the way: Glow sticks, flashlights, or a little reflective tape on bags and costumes make a huge difference in helping drivers see your crew.

🎃 Travel in a pack: Tag along with trick-or-treaters under 12, and stick to corners and crosswalks when it's time to cross the road.

👻 Keep it comfy: Make sure costumes aren't tripping hazards, and consider face paint over bulky masks so little eyes can easily spot what's around them.

🚙 Cruising through neighborhoods? Take it extra slow, keep an eye out for kids darting across yards, and pop your headlights on a little earlier in the evening.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. 💜
For someone experiencing abuse, knowing they have a person who will listen and believe them can mean a great deal.

Domestic violence affects people of all backgrounds and can have lasting effects on health and well-being. According to the CDC, about 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men have experienced sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime.

While you’re thinking about it, take a closer look at what goes into your cup. Flavored syrups and sweetened creamers can add more sugar than you might expect. Maybe try one less pump of syrup or a smaller splash of creamer next time and see what you think. You might still love it just as much! 🤎

💙 STEAR, the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry, is a free registry for individuals who may need additional assistance during an emergency, including people with disabilities, medical needs, limited mobility, communication barriers, or transportation needs. 🐾 If an emergency happened today, would your pet be ready to go with you?

During National Preparedness Month, take a few minutes to make sure your plans include every member of the family, including your pets. Hurricanes can bring flooding, power outages, and evacuations. Winter storms may create dangerous cold or make it difficult to reach food and medications. Even fireworks can frighten pets and cause them to hide or run away.

Keep identification current, know where you can safely take your pets, and prepare a kit with food, water, medications, veterinary records, leashes, carriers, waste supplies, and a few familiar comfort items. When severe weather or fireworks are expected, bring pets indoors and keep them safe and secure.

A little preparation today can make a big difference when your pet depends on you most.

September is National Preparedness Month, and this year is offering an important reminder: quiet weather does not mean the risk is over.

This hurricane season has been unusually quiet. In fact, the Atlantic has reached late September without a hurricane for the first time in 112 years. Still, hurricane season continues through November 30, and a strong El Niño could bring a wetter, stormier pattern to our area this winter.

The attached emergency and flood preparedness checklists offer simple ways to get ready, including making a family plan, checking supplies, protecting important documents, knowing your flood risk, and signing up for local alerts.
