🚨IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS🚨

The Victoria County Sheriff’s Office continues to address recent social media posts circulating across various platforms as part of a nationwide “Cat in the Hat” social media hoax referencing school campuses across the country.

Yesterday, a Howell Middle School student was taken into custody for Online Harassment. During the preliminary investigation, the student stated their actions were intended as “a joke.”

This morning, a STEM Middle School student was taken into custody for Terroristic Threat. During the preliminary investigation, the student stated their actions were intended as “a joke.”

There were no students or staff harmed, and no weapons were located at either campus.

Parents/Guardians, we need your help:

1. Talk with your student about the consequences of their actions.
The Victoria County Sheriff’s Office has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to the safety and security of our school campuses, students, and staff. Any “joke” that creates fear or panic and results in a law enforcement response can lead to an arrest and transport to the Juvenile Justice Center.

2. Talk to your student about social media safety.
If your student uses social media, remind them to only accept friend or follow requests from people they know. Accepting random requests can create vulnerabilities and open the door to unwanted or inappropriate messages.

3. Creating an additional social media account is not, by itself, against the law.
However, using an account to make threats, create panic, instill fear, or prompt a law enforcement response can result in criminal charges.

4. Report suspicious activity.
If you or your student observes suspicious social media posts or activity, please avoid sharing or amplifying unverified information. Instead, report it to your school administration or directly to the
Victoria County Sheriff’s Office.
