The mission of this page is to promote and protect the natural environment of the Little Cahaba River. The river's unique ecological system protects endangered flora and multiple species of fauna. The river provides drinking water for the city of Birmingham, yet is under constant threat of pollution and encroaching development. We do not ask for anything from followers of this page (other than goo

d pics of the river) except public advocacy for protection of this unique and precious river environment. Advocate with: the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the State of Alabama, the Birmingham Water Works, Jefferson and Shelby counties. Think globally and act locally.

We care a lot about the big river, but we love our tributaries too. What's your favorite?

In this, the final week of 2023, Freshwater Land Trust added 86 acres to our land conservation footprint with the closing of a property on Turkey Creek in Pinson. This parcel completes “phase two” of the existing LaRocca CE, a 92-acre property placed in a conservation easement with FLT back in 2021. With this addition, this CE now protects 178 acres of mixed hardwood and pine forest bordering Turkey Creek.

Our Swim Guide program gives EVERYONE access to vital information to make informed decisions about where to recreate on the Cahaba River. In our first year of monitoring, we collected 36 bacteria samples. In our 9th year, we collected 512. That wouldn’t be possible without our sponsors, community partners, and most importantly, the interns who give their time and energy to collect the samples.

Please join us in thanking our Swim Guide interns of 2022: Jenesis Morgan, Jaiden Hatch, Natalie Watts, Donovahn Wyatt, Maria Timberlake, Lucas Geurs, Caitlin Holt, Marlana Harwood, Brad Randazzo, MaryClare Gabel, and Helen Parris for their hard work in collecting data for YOUR water quality information!
