On Tuesday, Glenwood Elementary fourth graders took a field trip down the Parkway to Binghamton University. They participated in a range of fun, hands-on activities.

Students visited the BU Art Museum, where they viewed two spring exhibits. One was “Line, Color, Contrast: Japanese Prints and the New York Arts & Crafts Movement” and the other was “Drawing Connections: Frank Lloyd Wright.”

Our Golden Bears took a tour of the Fab Lab. The Watson Fabrication Lab is where engineering students go to make things for courses or for projects of their own. The students were excited to see drill presses, welding equipment, and 3D printing resources.

Another fun stop on campus was to the Public Archaeology Facility. The fourth graders learned about how archaeologists study and preserve history. In the Physics department, they took part in interactive physics demonstrations.

A major highlight of the day included a visit to the Genetics Lab. The students did a fun experiment which included extracting DNA from strawberries and viewing some of the organisms that are used in genetic research.

It was a long day full of excitement and new experiences!

Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week is coming up!

We know it’s not always easy to volunteer your time, so we’re making it VERY simple to help! You can support the staff by donating items from our Amazon Wish List—no planning or prep needed! Just choose an item, and we’ll take care of the rest!

Every contribution, big or small, helps us create a week full of gratitude, treats, and well-deserved recognition for our amazing teachers and staff!

There are some days during the week your student can participate in to show their love!

Third grade students transformed Glenwood Elementary into a Living Museum! Students chose historical or modern-day public figures to research and bring to life. They created placards and wore costumes to represent their person. Families were invited to walk through the Living Museum to hear a short presentation about each person.

Glenwood Elementary students lit up the dance floor at last week's annual Glow Dance Party! Thank you to the middle school, high school and parent volunteers that made this event spectacular! The GSCA asked for food and clothing donations for the school’s Snack Pack and Care Closet. Thank you to MJ's Events and Photo Booth Rental for providing an awesome photo booth. And thank you to Glenwood’s art department for making fabulous artwork for the event. We are looking forward to next year’s Glow Dance Party!

In early January, Glenwood Elementary teachers Mrs. Cherevko and Ms. MacCrabie read aloud a book called "Each Kindness" by Jacqueline Woodson. The teacher in the story gives a lesson on how even small acts of kindness can change the world. Their students were so moved by the story that they asked if they could help others in need, so they brainstormed some ideas. They decided that they wanted to help people who are less fortunate like the character in the story. So, Mrs. Cherevko reached out to her aunt, Rose Blaine, who works with less fortunate people in the area. She mentioned that some basic everyday items would be great. The classes decided that they would start a collection with just the 2nd Grade classes. The photo below of the girl next to the donation bags is Milana Young with all of her donations on a flatbed cart! She made and sold bracelets to earn enough money to buy her donations (almost $400).

All of the collected donations for January were sorted and tallied and then delivered in 3 carloads to St. Ambrose church in Endicott. It's amazing how one story inspired real kindness and made a difference in the lives of others.

Ms. Morgan's 4th graders at Glenwood enjoyed having the high school students that came to visit last week. They pulled out their class pictures to reminisce, played hot potato, enjoyed a math lesson and even participated in music class and PE! What great sports they were.

4th graders got a chance to try out snowshoes today thanks to the Broome-Tioga BOCES PE loan equipment program. Students practiced stopping, turning, jumping and elevations! They also incorporated their Bear Tracks Club running program while using snowshoes, traveling the lower field track to gain miles.

Glenwood PE teachers love to utilize this amazing loan program to introduce lifelong fitness units like this as well as rollerblading, drumming, bowling, BOSU balls, Frisbee Golf and Geocaching to their students.
