“Between May 21, 2026 and May 27, 2026, 33 nonfatal, and 1 fatal, suspected drug overdose emergency medical service
(EMS) encounters were reported in Fayette County through ODMAP (Overdose Detection Mapping Application System),
which represents an unusually high number of suspected nonfatal drug overdose encounters in this period. As a result,
people who use drugs in or around this area should take caution to protect themselves.
ODMAP is used to monitor suspected drug overdose encounters in EMS data to identify possible clusters of drug
overdoses in Kentucky. Drug overdose alerts are generated when a county shows an unusual increase in nonfatal drug
overdose-related EMS encounters in a 24-hour period.”

The Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH) has confirmed an increase in a rare type of pediatric brain cancer, DIPG/DMG, in Eastern Kentucky. Experts have found 10 cases of DIPG/DMG in young people in the region since 2024. This type of cancer is very rare, and normally, Kentucky only sees two to three cases among young people each year statewide. There are currently no known causes or risk factors for DIPG/DMG.

KDPH is working with the Kentucky Cancer Registry, the Kentucky Pediatric Cancer Research Trust Fund, local health departments, and other partners to share information and resources.

Team Kentucky remains committed to supporting affected families and advancing research to find a cure. Pediatric cancer research in Kentucky is partially funded by the Kentucky Pediatric Cancer Research Trust Fund, which is administered by KDPH. Since 2020, Team Kentucky has invested more than $45 million in the Kentucky Pediatric Cancer Research Trust Fund, including more than $9.6 million in research on DIPG/DMG and other pediatric brain and central nervous system cancers since July of 2024.
More information about DIPG/DMG, including resources for affected families, is available at DIPG.org.
