The worsening drought, Independence Day planning and Missouri's burn ban statute are leading to questions about who decides whether fireworks can be used in our state.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
▶ First and foremost - public fireworks displays are safer than using fireworks on your own, whether there's a drought or not;
▶ The State Fire Marshal and the State of Missouri do NOT have the authority to ban the use of fireworks because of drought (or any other conditions) conditions;
▶ Some local jurisdictions in Missouri completely ban the use of fireworks year round; some jurisdictions permit the use of fireworks on a few select dates around the July 4th holiday; Always understand and comply with your local ordinances;
▶ Missouri's burn ban statute permits county commissions to impose a burn ban following consultation with the State Fire Marshal but the statute includes the following: "The county burn ban may prohibit the explosion or ignition of any missile or skyrocket as the terms "missile" and "skyrocket" are defined by the 2012 edition of the American Fireworks Standards Laboratory, but shall not ban the explosion or ignition of any other consumer fireworks . ."

Think of safety first. Last year in Missouri, 324 people sought hospital care related to fireworks; 292 of those people were treated in emergency rooms and released; 32 people were admitted to the hospital. Over 75 percent of these injuries occurred from June 21 to July 11.

The City of Versailles will still be planning on having a Fire Works display on the 3rd of July. The City will be banning Chinese lanterns this year within the city limits. If you have any questions call City Hall 378-4634

This was a mutual aid training with some of our newest members and our Jr. firefighters. we performed a control burn of around 5 acres.
