Midway and Woodford County have lost one of our very brightest lights and truest treasures with the passing of our beloved Doris Leigh.
Mrs. Doris Leigh was affectionately known to many as Momma Leigh, GiGi or simply G. To know her was to love her, and to be loved by her was one of the greatest blessings.
She held a deeply special place in my life and heart. Throughout my life and public service, Doris was a steady source of wisdom, encouragement, joy, and unconditional grace. I was so looking forward to honoring her with a Proclaimation for her upcoming 96th birthday, which will now be a memorial for her family.
It was a true honor to know her and call her my friend. Whether it was catching up on the phone, sharing memories, or just being on the receiving end of her radiant smile and sharp, caring counsel, every moment with Momma Leigh left you feeling lifted and inspired. She didn't just serve our community. She was part of our heart and soul.
Doris lived a life devoted to others. Born and raised in Midway, her impact on Woodford County spans generations. Long before her decades in local government, she cared for our community as a nurse, having given baby injections to half of Midway, and served her neighbors at the Midway Post Office. She then dedicated over 42 years of faithful service to the citizens of Woodford County as Chief Deputy in the Property Valuation Administrator’s (PVA) office at the courthouse.
Countless county leaders, judges, and attorneys through the years made it a point to catch an elevator ride or sit in her office just to get a few minutes of Doris’s common-sense wisdom and sharp insight.
After retiring from the courthouse, Mrs. Leigh answered the call yet again, serving her neighbors on the Midway City Council and continuing her lifelong commitment to volunteer work and community life. Doris was the first woman to Chair the Woodford County Democratic Party and had a keen knowledge and sense for politics. She was a people person and knew our community through and through.
Her faith ran deep through her service at Midway United Methodist Church, and her greatest joy and proudest legacy was always her family.
While we mourn her loss here, there is profound peace in knowing she is reunited with her beloved husband of 74 years, Charlie.
Thank you to her wonderful family who shared her with us. My love is with her family, her dear children, Julie and David Clark and Steve Leigh, all her beloved grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. Cara, our family, and the entire Woodford County community send you our deepest love, condolences, and prayers. Mrs. Leigh's love, light and legacy will live on through her dear family.
