Last night, the Versailles community celebrated the 170th birthday of James H. Tyson, our town’s benefactors, with the Tyson Fund Trustees awarding $766,160 from the James H. Tyson Fund to organizations in Versailles.

Mr. Tyson established the Fund in 1931 with 18,000 shares of Walgreens stock, creating a lasting legacy of support for the Versailles community. This year marks the 96th year of distributions, with the Fund having contributed more than $27.6 million to Versailles over those 96 years.

The Town of Versailles is incredibly grateful for the continued generosity of the Tyson Fund and the lasting impact of Mr. Tyson’s vision.

This year’s distribution will help the Town:
• Contribute toward the water bond payment
• Make equipment payments
• Fund sewer system repairs
• Replace the remaining old water meters with digital meters
• Make improvements to Town Hall

Nearly a century later, Mr. Tyson’s gift continues to make a difference in the everyday life of our community. That is an extraordinary legacy and one that Versailles is fortunate to carry forward.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Tyson!

🚧 COMMUNITY CROSSINGS | PERRY STREET PROJECT UPDATE 🚧

We’re officially entering the final stretch of the Perry Street project!

The utility work is now complete, including:

💧 New water laterals from the main line to residences
🚽 New sewer laterals from the main line to residences
🔧 Sewer main repairs
🌧️ New stormwater infrastructure

What’s next?

➡️ Curbing and gutters
➡️ New sidewalks
➡️ Full-depth reconstruction of the roadway

Thank you, Perry and Willis Street residents and everyone who has navigated the construction this summer. We know it has been a long summer of construction, and we truly appreciate everyone’s patience as this project moves toward completion. We know projects like this are disruptive, but the improvements made underground are an important part of building a better, more reliable infrastructure system.

This extensive project took many years of planning and saving for the required local match, and we’re thrilled to see it this far along! O’Mara is currently targeting October for project completion, weather permitting. 🍂

The Town of Versailles has been awarded a $750,000 grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) to make important improvements to our drinking water system.

The funding will help us:

🔹 Replace aging water meter pits
🔹 Replace water service lines
🔹 Replace water hydrants
🔹 Demolish the old, unused 75,000-gallon water tank

This project was identified as a priority through the Town's Utility Planning Study, completed in 2025 with support from an OCRA planning grant. That study gave us a comprehensive look at our utility infrastructure and helped identify the improvements needed to address aging infrastructure and plan responsibly for the future.

We are grateful to OCRA for this investment in Versailles and to the Southeastern Indiana Regional Planning Commission for their support in making strategic improvements to our water system. These projects aren't always the most visible, but they are critical to maintaining reliable infrastructure and supporting the future of our community.

The Town of Versailles spent the last year working through its first ever Comprehensive Plan through an Indiana Office of Community & Rural Affairs Planning Grant. Over the last year, a steering committee of residents, business owners, and government officials helped guide this process as information was collected from the community via focus groups, public workshops, and a community survey. The plan is available for review and public comment. Access the plan and share your feedback here: https://www.versaillescompplan.com/

In response to resident concerns about roadway safety, The Town of Versailles applied for and was awarded a Safe Streets and Roads for All grant from the Federal Highway Administration to study the roadway network in Versailles, identify issues, and develop countermeasures to improve safety for all roadway users. Work is underway to collect crash and safety data, including collecting data from our community and those who travel through Versailles via a public survey available here: https://verdantasplanning.com/versaillesss4a/
Additionally, the consultant completing the study will be at both Market on the Square from 9 - noon and Music on the Square from 5:30 - 9 pm on Saturday, August 15th to talk with community members about their road safety concerns. Please fill out the survey and stop by the events on August 15th to share your input. More information on SS4A is available at the project website: https://verdantasplanning.com/versaillesss4a/
