Over the last few weeks, the Verona Police Department hosted three Verona High School Students, for their Capstone Program. The students had the unique opportunity to experience policing and the criminal justice system from every angle. They visited Municipal Court, Superior Court, and Family Court to gain firsthand insight into the judicial process. They trained and learned alongside professionals at the Essex County Police Academy, Newark Police Academy, and spent time with the Elizabeth Police Department, Jersey City Police Department and Newark Police Department.

Students explored specialized law enforcement units including the NYPD Counterterrorism Unit, Somerset County K-9 Unit, Newark Police Emergency Services Unit (ESU), and Mounted Unit. They also had the honor of visiting the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, where they learned about advanced law enforcement training and leadership development.

In addition to site visits, students earned CPR certifications and participated in cutting-edge Virtual Reality (VR) training scenarios designed to enhance decision-making and critical thinking skills.

From local police departments to some of the largest law enforcement agencies in the country, our Capstone students were able to observe and learn about all aspects of policing in both small and large agencies. This hands-on experience provided valuable insight into careers in law enforcement, public service, criminal justice, and community engagement.

Thank you to all of our law enforcement partners, courts, instructors, and professionals who dedicated their time to making this program a success. We are proud of our students and look forward to seeing what the future holds for them!

After nearly 25 years of dedicated service to the Verona community, the Verona Police Department congratulates Officer Joel Martin on his well-earned retirement.

Officer Martin was hired on July 27, 2001, and attended the Essex County Police Academy before beginning a distinguished career serving the residents of Verona. Throughout his time with the department, Officer Martin proudly served in both the Patrol Division and the Detective Bureau, where he became widely known for his work as the Department’s Juvenile Detective.

During his time in that role, Joel built strong relationships with our schools, students, parents, and community members. He spearheaded and helped develop numerous programs and initiatives that positively impacted countless young people throughout Verona, including Police Day, Senior Capstone programs, high school driver education initiatives, and many other community outreach efforts.

Joel’s commitment, compassion, and ability to connect with people made a lasting impact that is difficult to fully express in words. His legacy within the Verona Police Department and throughout the community will continue to be felt for many years to come.

Officer Martin will truly be missed by his fellow officers, coworkers, and the residents he served so proudly. We thank him for his years of dedication, professionalism, and service to the Township of Verona, and we wish him nothing but health, happiness, and success in retirement.

Congratulations, Joel!
