After nearly 25 years of dedicated service to the Verona community, the Verona Police Department congratulates Officer Joel Martin on his well-earned retirement.

Officer Martin was hired on July 27, 2001, and attended the Essex County Police Academy before beginning a distinguished career serving the residents of Verona. Throughout his time with the department, Officer Martin proudly served in both the Patrol Division and the Detective Bureau, where he became widely known for his work as the Department’s Juvenile Detective.

During his time in that role, Joel built strong relationships with our schools, students, parents, and community members. He spearheaded and helped develop numerous programs and initiatives that positively impacted countless young people throughout Verona, including Police Day, Senior Capstone programs, high school driver education initiatives, and many other community outreach efforts.

Joel’s commitment, compassion, and ability to connect with people made a lasting impact that is difficult to fully express in words. His legacy within the Verona Police Department and throughout the community will continue to be felt for many years to come.

Officer Martin will truly be missed by his fellow officers, coworkers, and the residents he served so proudly. We thank him for his years of dedication, professionalism, and service to the Township of Verona, and we wish him nothing but health, happiness, and success in retirement.

Congratulations, Joel!

Verona Police Department – Community Update

The Verona Police Department is aware of a social media post, as well as other forms of communication, circulating regarding an alleged threat to Verona High School.

We want to reassure the community that there is no credible threat to any Verona school at this time.

Any incidents, activity, or behavior that may be perceived as a potential threat are immediately reviewed in coordination with school officials using New Jersey’s standardized, statewide school threat assessment protocols, which are designed to evaluate and respond to potential risks in a consistent and structured manner. Based on that assessment, no actual threat to students or staff was identified.

There have been no postings, communications, or verbal threats indicating a shooting at any school or school-related event. Information received has largely consisted of rumors and unverified second- or even third-hand accounts that have been traced back to individuals who “heard it from someone else,” and have not been substantiated. These types of rumors can evolve and spread quickly, often resulting in multiple, inconsistent versions of information that have never been verified.

Unfortunately, unverified information — including references to a student — has caused unnecessary concern. Sharing unconfirmed information, particularly involving juveniles, is irresponsible and disruptive.

Residents are encouraged to rely on official sources for accurate information and to report any concerns directly to law enforcement so they can be properly assessed. The Verona Police Department will continue working closely with district staff to ensure a safe environment.

We appreciate the community’s cooperation in keeping Verona safe, informed, and respectful.

The Verona Police Department extends its sincere appreciation to The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in Cedar Grove for helping provide Epinephrine Auto-Injectors (EpiPens) for use while on duty.

Through the generosity of Owner/Pharmacist Amin Amireh, who donated half the cost of the kits, our officers are equipped with additional life-saving tools to respond to severe allergic reactions and medical emergencies in our community.

Thank you for supporting the Verona Police Department and for helping ensure our officers have the tools they need to save lives.
