Interstate travel is not good at this time. 11:25AM Friday, February 6th, 2026. There are multiple accidents on I -71, as well as a Jack knifed semi 75 South at Richwood. Be safe out there!

We are sad to hear about the passing of former Boone County Sheriff Michael Helmig. He was a great man, and leader who was dedicated to our community for many years. He will be deeply missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the rest of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.

Many are asking about road conditions:
State Highway, private contractors, as well as county road departments have been out working. See pictures attached of road conditions within the last hour or so. Do note, since these were taken we did have a period of heavy snow, therefore everything may have covered over a little more. Cars will have a hard time clearing some driveways, where the drive meets the plowed roads, as well as intersections. US 42 from the county line East towards Florence, Verona Mudlick from 71 to 42, and Lebanon Crittenden Rd were pretty rough at the time of these pictures (deep snow) at approximately 4:30 1/25/2026. 

GALLATIN COUNTY AS OF 5PM TODAY 1/25 IS UNDER A LEVEL 3 SNOW ENERGENCY until further notice. Be safe!

❄️ Snow Update: Saturday, Jan. 24 ❄️

County officials continue to monitor the weekend's weather forecast. Currently, the plan established yesterday is still in effect. Here's what you need to know:

✔ A Level One Snow Emergency will go into effect at noon TODAY, Saturday, Jan. 24.
✔ Please move parked cars off the street so crews can effectively treat and clear snow from roads.
✔ Crews will treat and plow roads early, and then only plow as snow intensity increases.
✔ More than 60 drivers are scheduled to report to work this weekend's snowstorm. They will work in alternating shifts.
✔ Crews will be spending the night at work to ensure they can safely return for their next shift.

The County will share updates and helpful information here throughout the winter storm. Stay safe, Boone County!

At 05:01, crews were dispatched to Southbound Interstate 71 near the 70mm for a tractor trailer fire. Engine 81 arrived first on scene reporting fire showing from the rear exterior of the trailer near the wheels. Fire was extinguished, all units available, roadway re-opened.

At 09:07, crews were dispatched to Southbound Interstate 71 near the 72mm for a tractor trailer fire. Tanker 81 arrived first on scene reporting fire showing from the front interior of the trailer. Crews gained access into the trailer and extinguished the fire. All units available, roadway re-opened.

Today, Firefighter Ian Wilson graduated from The Fire Academy of Kentucky as a member of class 007.

Ian has obtained his IFSAC Firefighter I and II certificatons, Driver/Operator - Pumper, and Hazmat Awareness and Operations.

We are proud of the hard work and commitment Ian put into this 13 week course!

Today we had Industrial Inspection & Analysis out to perform the annual test on all our fire hose. We had approximately 7600ft of hose tested today.
