The Headwaters District is one of 47 Soil and Water Conservation Districts in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Formed in 1975, the District is a part of the state government which provides citizens the structure and the capability to solve conservation problems at a local grassroots level. Soil and Water Conservation Districts administer Virginia's Agricultural Best Management Practices Cost-Share Pr

ogram, with technical assistance from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Cooperation between agencies and sharing technical expertise enables the Headwaters District to assist the community in protecting its natural resources. Headwaters District covers over 1,000 square miles of the Shenandoah Valley (approximately 621,893 acres), including Augusta County and the Cities of Staunton and Waynesboro. The District is flanked by the Allegheny Mountains on the west, and the Blue Ridge Mountains on the east. Soils derived from sandstone and shales extend along the mountains and foothills, while soils of limestone origin are in the rolling valleys between the mountains. Headwaters is aptly named, as two river systems, which both empty into the Chesapeake Bay, originate here. The northern two-thirds of Augusta County drain to the South Fork of the Shenandoah River, and the streams in the southern third of the District flow into the James. Augusta County has the second largest income from farming production and poultry production in Virginia, and is in the top five counties for dairy, beef, alfalfa hay and hardwood production. The growing population of the District causes increasing pressure for development on prime farmland.

On this ๐Ÿ‚Thankful Thursday๐Ÿ‚, we're celebrating the farmers who sustain our community here in Augusta County! Harvest may be wrapping up, but their hard work keeps our soil healthy and fields thriving for seasons to come.

We had a great day touring a few farms in Northeast Augusta County as part of our Fall Farm Bus Tour to take a close-up look at some BMP projects funded by the Virginia Agricultural Cost-Share Program (VACS).

There are many people we would like to thank in making this event successful, including our partner agencies and organizations USDA-NRCS, USDA-FSA, VA Cooperative Extension, Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Alliance for the Shenandoah Valley. A special thanks to Delegate Chris Runion and Carrie Sheffield, Chief of Staff for Senator Christopher Head, for taking the time out of your busy schedules to come along with us, and meet with the farmers and our participants. In addition, we say โ€œthanksโ€ to Farm Credit of the Virginias for joining us, and helping us sponsor our tour, and to Lively Hope Farm for riding along.

I would also like to thank our Board Members who joined us on our tour, to all our HW SWCD staff for making this possible, and to Jan Henley of Lucienโ€™s Catering for the fantastic lunch!

But most importantly, we would like to give a big shout out THANKS to our host farms: Garber Farms, LLC, WRF Farms, Endless View Farms and Farrar Farm. We very much appreciate all of your time to meet with us to discuss the projects and answer all our questions. Thank you for what you do every day!

We had a great day touring a few farms in Northeast Augusta County to look at some successful BMP projects. These were all completed with help from the Virginia Agricultural Cost-Share Program (VACS).
Thank you to our partner agencies and organizations for joining us, including USDA-NRCS, USDA-FSA, VA Cooperative Extension, Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Alliance for the Shenandoah Valley. Also, a special thanks to Delegate Chris Runion and Carrie Sheffield, Chief of Staff for Senator Chistopher Head, for taking the time out of your busy schedules to participate, and finally to Farm Credit of the Virginias for helping us sponsor the event, and Lively Hope Farm for riding along with us.

But most importantly, we would like to give a big shout "THANKS" to our host farms: Garber Farms, Inc, WRF Farms, Endless View Farms and Farrar Farm. We very much appreciate you taking the time to show us these projects and, thank you for what you do every day!
