TRANSFER STATION CLOSED as of 10:00am Saturday 9/12/26

It will be back in service on Monday at 9am.

Due to an increase in the amount of trash we are receiving and time changes at the Iowa Park dump ground, all transportation trailers are full.

We will add capacity for the additional trash next week.

This week’s Employee Spotlight shines on Regina Nava with the Streets Department.

Our City Manager shared this about Regina:

“When we had the fire in East Vernon the other day, I saw Regina rolling up a fire hose that was bigger than she was.

She was struggling with the weight of the hose and the extreme heat we had that day, but she did not quit and showed that she was determined to get the job done.

It doesn’t matter if she is helping another department or her regular Streets Department duties, Regina has a great attitude about getting the job done, the right way.”

Sometimes, it is the little moments that tell you the most about a person. Regina’s determination, willingness to help, and positive attitude are exactly the qualities that make a difference when serving our community.

Thank you, Regina, for always being willing to step up, lend a hand, and get the job done.

Today, we remember. We honor. And we move forward, believing that we can all make a difference in both little and big ways.

We thank our first responders and remember their sacrifices, both then and now. As we reflect on the tragedy that happened 25 years ago, we know it was a day that forever changed us.

We came together as a nation.
We loved.
We helped.
We stood beside one another.

Let us continue to remember the lives lost, those who fought, and those who continue to serve, protect, heal, and carry the weight of that day with them.

May we never forget. May we always remember. And may we continue to choose kindness, courage, and unity, because each of us has the ability to make a difference.

🇺🇸 HONORING 9/11 & OUR FIRST RESPONDERS 🇺🇸

This Friday night, our community will come together for more than just the first home football game of the season. We will come together to remember, honor, and recognize those who serve.

Twenty-five years ago, on September 11, 2001, our nation was forever changed. Thousands of lives were lost in the terrorist attacks, including hundreds of firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and other first responders who ran toward danger to help others.

Before Friday night’s game, a special commemorative ceremony will honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 and recognize the first responders who continue to serve our communities today.

🇺🇸 A five-person Honor Guard will post the Colors at midfield.

🎶 The National Anthem will be performed jointly by the Vernon High School and City View High School bands.

🚓🚒🚑 FIRST RESPONDERS: If you would like to participate in the on-field recognition and National Anthem, please meet Wilbarger County Sheriff Brian Fritze in the east end zone no later than 6:45 p.m. Participating first responders will walk onto the field before the Honor Guard enters and remain on the field through the National Anthem.

The evening’s pregame activities will also include the Lil’ Lionbackers preparing for their runout at approximately 6:30 p.m., followed at 6:35 p.m. by a special presentation of framed jerseys recognizing recent Vernon Lions graduates who have gone on to serve in the United States military.

We encourage everyone to arrive by 6:30 p.m. or earlier. Help us fill the stands early as Vernon honors those serving our country and communities—and remembers those who gave their lives on September 11, 2001.

Then, at 7:00 p.m., it’s time for some Lion football! 🏈🦁

The Vernon Police Department is proud to stand alongside our fellow first responders, military members, and community as we honor the legacy of September 11.

It’s newsletter time, Vernon! There are so many great things happening in our community, and we want to make sure you stay in the know. Be sure to check out this month’s newsletter for upcoming events, community updates, and more.

But this month, we especially want to highlight our quarterly FREE DUMP VOUCHERS!

The vouchers will be included with your City of Vernon water bill, giving residents a great opportunity to continue our cleanup efforts and take a little extra pride in our homes and neighborhoods.

With an influx of visitors coming to Vernon, there’s no better time for all of us to work together to make our community look as good as we know it can. Whether you’re clearing away extra junk and debris, cleaning up your property, or helping a neighbor who may need a hand, every effort makes a difference!

Free Dump Voucher Guidelines:

• Stop at the scales and present your voucher and driver’s license to qualify for the free dump.
• Write your name and address on the voucher.
• Vouchers may not be duplicated. Anyone attempting to duplicate a voucher will be banned from this privilege.
• No commercial accounts. If you are being paid to haul someone else’s trash, you do not qualify for the free voucher.
• The free dump limit is 2,000 pounds (1 ton). Anything over 2,000 pounds will require payment.
• One free dump per household per quarter.

And remember, there’s another convenient option for getting rid of those larger items!

Bulky Item Trash Pickup is available every Wednesday. To schedule a pickup, residents must call 877-592-5030 before 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

This service is available at no additional cost to City of Vernon water and trash customers, so we encourage everyone to take advantage of these services as we continue working together to keep Vernon clean, welcoming, and ready to show our visitors what our community is all about!
