We’ll be celebrating Independence Day in a couple weeks! City of Vernon, Texas

You showed up in a BIG way last year, and we're ready to do it again!

Join us as we celebrate America's 250th Birthday at the Santa Rosa Rodeo Grounds for another BOOMING Independence Day celebration on Friday, July 3rd!

Gates open at 5:00 PM, and the fireworks show will begin at dark.

Great read about one of our own!

WAGGONER RANCH

He went looking for water. He found oil instead.

Dan Waggoner started with 242 cattle trailing into Wise County in the early 1850s. His wife had just died. He had nothing but grit and a herd. He built that into one of the largest cattle operations in North Texas — and then his son W.T. took it further than anyone imagined.

When they drilled for water on the Waggoner land in 1903, they struck oil. W.T. didn’t know what to do with it at first — cattle was the business. But by 1911 the oil fields at Electra were roaring and the Waggoners built their own refinery. The tanks and railcars all carried the Three D brand — the same one Dan had burned into cattle hides fifty years before.

W.T. named a Texas town after his daughter Electra. He built Arlington Downs Racetrack. He hosted President Teddy Roosevelt on a wolf hunt. He was one of the most powerful men in the Southwest and he got there starting with a dead wife, a small herd, and a piece of raw Texas dirt.

Today over 1,000 oil wells still pump on that land. Cattle still graze around them.

Dan Waggoner would not believe what that little herd became.
