Vernon is on the move! As a special cameration to American History achievements by Black Americans on Feb 22nd, 2025, Vernon hosted a Veterans Dinner and ceremony.
Don Nichols of the Order of the Purple Heart choose to recognize Vernon Oklahoma as a Purple Heart Town acknowledging the service and sacrifices made by Vernon residents who did their part to ensure the safety and security of American democracy.
Executive Director of the Vernon Chamber of Commerce C. L. Baccus Jr. and chamber Secretary Marvin Dozier were on hand, The Vernon Charitable Foundation Inc. was represented by Tina Dozier, and the Town of Vernon was represented the First family Mayor , George Dozier Jr., his wife and daughter and Secretary/Treasurer Stephanie Martinez were all on hand to ensure the first ever joint event hosted by all three organizations was a success.
The 3 organizations decided to pay extra special tribute and thanks to all veterans by hosting a Veterans Dinner immediately following the Purple Heart highway sign presentation ceremony.
Mayor Dozier was presented with the highway sign. Mayor Dozier then addressed the crowd telling them why the honor was special to him. Don Nichols address the crowd as did chamber Exec. Director C. L. Baccus Jr. The colors were presented and Don Nichols entertained the crowd with some war stories and explained that he had a special affinity for the project because a black soldier had saved his life in Viet Nam and he wanted to do what he could to be sure all the black soldiers who had long been overlooked got the recognition they deserved.
After the remarks the Chamber Exec. Director led the group in prayer and the meal of BBQ Ribs, BBQ Chicken, BBQ Brisket, baked beans, BBQ beans, smoked jalapeno Brats, potato salad, green salad, rolls and lemonade was served.
Chef Jamie from Dallas provided the big hit of the day with her signature Almond sheet cake for dessert. Everyone had seconds.
Don Nichols said it was a wonderful dinner. The Order of the Purple Heart was so pleased with the success of the event, that they made a $200 donation to the Vernon Chamber of Commerce.
The event was open to all veterans and their families who wore their hat or uniform regardless of where they lived. There was food in abundance and everyone took plates home.
