What an incredible Community Service Day yesterday! Our students and staff were busy all over Nashville and Vermontville, making a huge impact on our local community.

Here is a quick look at what we accomplished together:
Total Impact: Our amazing volunteers completed 3 hours of community service across numerous local sites.

Cleaning Up: We collected 150 cubic feet of garbage and cleaned 4 total miles of road, including Mason Rd and Nashville Hwy.

Senior Support: We visited with a total of 120+ residents at Flower House and Thornapple Manor, where we washed windows, played card games, filled bird feeders, did crafts, and enjoyed some great visits.

Beautifying Our Schools & Town:
- Cleaned around 200 windows at the Jr/Sr High School and landscaped around the Central Office.
- Completed landscaping at the Putnam District Library, Parody & Riverside Parks, and Grace Community Church.
- Spread 20 yards of mulch, stained a gazebo, and painted two dugouts.
- Helped clean the Vermontville Cemetery and the Paul Henry Thornapple Trail.

Gardening: We planted a 100 x 50-foot garden at Hickey Farms, which will be used as a community garden in conjunction with the Vermontville Lions Club.

Creative Projects: We also assembled over 100 pinwheels, picked up pine cones for future craft projects, and planted new flowers.

We are so proud of everyone who participated in giving back to the community that supports us every day. Way to go, Lions!

On May 14th at 6PM, Ms. Angel Christopher received the Teacher of the Year Award from the Charlotte Optimist Club. A meal was served in her honor and she received a plaque, a traveling trophy that will spend the year in our Main Office and a gift of $500.

Ms. Christopher was recognized for being an exemplar of the Optimist Creed and for her hard work in coordinating the Optimist Student Recognition Awards for Maple Valley Schools.

UPDATE for Weather-Related Shelter-in-Place
We are releasing buses to begin the afternoon trips home at approximately 3:15 pm. We experienced strong winds, pea sized hail and heavy rain. We hope everyone sheltered safely through the storm.

Based upon radar reviews, we believe the immediate danger has passed and we want to get students home prior to any potential for flash flooding.

We have had reports of downed power lines so we will be watching on our bus routes. Please stay tuned in to your phone in case an alternate drop off needs to be arranged for your child. You may hear from the dispatcher or your bus driver.

When we have the all clear, doors will be opened for dismissal.

Weather-Related Shelter-in-Place
We will be sheltering in place due to a Severe thunderstorm warning that will expire at 3PM. The alert is notifying us of 80 mile per hour winds and flying debris. We have also heard of a potential touchdown of a tornado in Wayland.

Our transportation will be delayed at least 30 minutes due to the tornado shelter in place. We will send out another notice when all buses have left the buildings.

The MV Foreign Language Club is hosting its first meeting regarding planning for the 2028 Spring Break Trip abroad. Anyone and everyone interested...including, but not limited to, students, parents, teachers, and community members.
