We are so sad to hear about the passing of Dolly Parton, an early literacy advocate who made it her life mission to get books in the hands of children across the United States and beyond. In over 30+ years of executing her Imagination Library project, she gifted over 300 million books across five countries. She believed reading belonged to everyone, regardless of income or circumstances.

Nothing could be more iconic than her ALA Read poster, posing with some of America’s favorite picture book classics.

Dolly has significantly impacted the future of global literacy, and we could not be more proud and honored to carry on her mission through Dolly Parton Imagination Library with the help of Tracy Family Foundation as our sponsor for Schuyler County.

📚✨July librarian book recommendation of the month! At the end of each month, one of the books from our collection that our librarian Abby read and loved will be featured! There will be a little blurb about the book and some thoughts from Abby! We will do our best to span multiple genres📚😊

This month I am recommending: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of twelve stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle, featuring his famous detective. Venture back in time to Victorian London to join literature's greatest detective team — the brilliant Sherlock Holmes and his devoted assistant, Dr. Watson — as they investigate a dozen of their best-known cases. Originally published in 1892, this is the first and best collection of stories about the legendary sleuth. Featured tales include several of the author's personal favorites: "A Scandal in Bohemia" — in which a king is blackmailed by a former lover and Holmes matches wits with the only woman to attract his open admiration — plus "The Speckled Band," "The Red-Headed League," and "The Five Orange Pips."

✨I was not sure what I was getting myself into reading this, but I’m so glad I did. I had an idea of who Holmes and Watson were as characters in the public domain, but this was the first time I’ve actually read the origins. The way ACD uses words and language in general is so clever. The first couple stories I was just kinda reading along, letting Sherlock tell me what was happening, but by the end I was theorizing alongside him and trying to read between the lines myself. The conclusions he comes to are fantastical but so much fun at the same time. I completely understand why Sherlock Holmes became so popular, absolutely get the hype now!✨
