Clay County, South Dakota The modern settlement of Clay County began in 1859 when the land was opened for legal occupation. The city of Vermillion was founded in 1859.

In 1862 the county organization was effected and commissioners and officers were named.

THE FIRST HALF OF REAL PROPERTY TAXES ARE DUE BY 5:00 P.M. APRIL 30 IF PAID IN OFFICE. IF YOU ARE MAILING IN YOUR PAYMENT THE ENVELOPE CONTAINING THE PAYMENT MUST HAVE AN APRIL POSTMARK. THERE IS ALSO AN OVERNIGHT DROP BOX LOCATED IN THE NORTH ENTRANCE TO THE COURTHOUSE. THAT WILL BE EMPTIED AT 12 MIDNIGHT ON APRIL 30. ANYTHING THAT IS LEFT IN THE DROP BOX AFTER 12 MIDNIGHT WILL BE CONSIDERED LATE AND INTEREST WILL BE DUE.

If you just recently received your June vehicle registration renewal notice you will have noticed that none of the vehicles listed on the notice are yours. Due to a computer glitch all of the June notices are wrong. The state DMV will be re-printing the notices this week (April 30) and sending them out.

The Clay County Courthouse will be closed tomorrow, January 30, 2019 due to the extreme weather condition.

The Clay County Treasurer's office will be closing at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 11, 2017 for the installation of new carpet.
