To all of our VPD K-9 Unit followers and supporters, first of all thank you for the support. Secondly, please be aware that there are various profiles that post on our page in the comments about selling t-shirts or sweatshirts that are NOT AFFILIATED with the VPD K-9 Program. These profiles are generally the same people who are changing their profile, tagging our followers and then adding a link to a page with a piece "VPD K-9 Unit Supporter" clothing appearal for sale. Be aware that we have no idea who these people are or if they are even a legitimate business. NONE OF THE PROCEEDS FROM THESE SALES ARE USED TO SUPPORT THE K-9 UNIT. We will have our own new edition VPD K-9 Supporter t-shirts available for sale soon and will have a table set up at the FOP #125 Steak Fry at German's Villa on 05/27/23 (a few tickets are still available). If you ever have questions if something is legitimately being sold to support the program, please call Sgt. Chandler at the VPD and ask.

It is unfortunate that we need to make this post. It appears that there are efforts to sell merchandise, specifically t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoddies, etc. based off of K-9 Miro’s passing. This merchandise has not been approved or requested by the VPD or the FOP #125 K-9 Fund. No organization has approached the VPD or FOP to seek selling items and the profits from these sales is not going towards the VPD or K-9 Fund.

The Vermilion FOP Lodge #125 K-9 Fund is the only authorized fund that all proceeds are used to support the VPD K-9 Unit. Any donations can be forwarded to the VPD c/o FOP K-9 #125 K-9 Fund at 5791 Liberty Ave., Vermilion, OH 44089 or contact Det. Sgt. Holmes or Sgt. Leo Chandler, who is the current K-9 Handler with K-9 Falon, directly. We also have current VPD K-9 Falon supporter t-shirts available.

It is unfortunate that others are attempting to profit off of K-9 Miro’s passing…

It is with a very heavy heart that I announce the passing of my Partner, best friend and family member, Miro. We made that difficult decision today to assist him across that proverbial rainbow bridge due to a sudden drastic decline in his health. Miro would have turned 12 years old at the end of this month.

This is cathartic for me to write, so bear with me. I met Miro in a dark airport hanger in January 2012. We have rarely been separated since that time. Between working shifts on patrol, training and home life, we were constantly together. He served the VPD with distinction from 2012-2020. He was retired in 2020 to live out his retirement at home with our family.

For those of you with pets who have passed, you know this heart break. But for those K-9 Handlers who have lost a Partner, you know what this loss does to the Handler and family all too well.

To all the other family, friends and coworkers, thank you for supporting Miro. A special thanks to the Vermilion Vet Clinic and Dr. Ranney for the special care you gave him.

Today Miro had a Cheeseburger and ice cream for lunch and then quietly passed in our backyard on his favorite dog bed with the sun shining while surrounded by family. I could not have created a better scene for it.

He will be missed and will not be forgotten.

Sincerely,
Det. Sgt. Scott Holmes

On 09/09/22 at 1:12 AM, a traffic stop was conducted on Liberty Ave for a moving violation. During that stop, the driver was asked to exit the vehicle to conduct an investigation. When the driver exited his vehicle a glass pipe used to smoke methamphetamine fell off of his lap and shattered on the ground at his feet in front of Ptl. Scholl. K-9 Falon and Sgt. Chandler were called to the scene and conducted a free air narcotics sniff around the involved vehicle. K-9 Falon gave a positive alert to the odor of illegal narcotics coming from the vehicle. A probable cause search was then conducted. Over 5 grams of methamphetamine, some suspected fentanyl, numerous items of drug paraphernalia and a modified flare gun loaded with a 12 gauge shotgun shell were all located inside the vehicle. The driver was arrested and charged with multiple felony crimes and was transported to jail.

This is just another example of great team work and the value of the VPD K-9 Unit.

Ahhh… The life of a retired police K-9…. K-9 Miro has been retired now for 2.5 years and still enjoys his morning roll arounds in the sun and grass.
