The 60th Annual Festival of the Fish is this weekend! Please see the information below from the VPD to help ensure that it is a safe and enjoyable festival for everyone.

- There will be VPD temporary no parking signs put up on several streets surrounding the festival grounds with additional signs placed up Saturday night for the parade route. Please ensure that you are parking legally and not blocking a private driveway, parking on private property without permission or parking in these temporary no parking zones.

- The southbound lane of Main St. will be temporarily closed from Main St. Beach to Liberty Ave. on Friday 06/19/26 from 8:00 PM until 11:00 PM. This lane will serve as a temporary pedestrian travel lane for all of the pedestrian traffic for the fireworks display. VPD Officers will be in the area to assist traffic. Main St. will be open and one way for the northbound lane only.

- Any alcoholic bevearges legally purchased within the festival gounds are only permitted inside the festival grounds. No open containers of alcohol are permitted outside that area and are not permitted at Main St. beach or anywhere outside the festival grounds.

- The parade starts at 12:00 PM on Sunday 06/21/26. This means that the parade route and surrounding roads will shut down at 11:30 AM. Make sure you arrive before that time to avoid the road closures.

- All dogs must be leashed. There is no bicycle riding within the festival grounds due to the amount of people in the area.

- The VPD will have Officers working the festival grounds, extra road patrol Officers in the evenings and the VPD Marine Patrol Unit will be patrolling the waterways all weekend. Please don't drink and drive or operate a boat while intoxicated. We want a safe weekend for everyone.

On 06/10/26 at 4:12 PM a VPD Officer observed two juveniles driving E dirtbikes (similar to the e dirtbike in this photo) down the middle of Liberty Ave. near Vermilion Rd. in heavy traffic. The juvenile riders were operating recklessly, weaving and doing wheelies in traffic. The Officer initiated a traffic stop of the two riders who then decided to split up and attempted to flee. Both of the juveniles (ages 13 & 14) were eventually taken into custody. Both were charged with reckless operation, operating without a driver's license and operating a non-registered vehicle on the roadway. Both E dirtbikes were towed and impounded. Their parents were called and picked up their children at the VPD.

I am making this post to bring light to this growing issue in Vermilion and frankly across the country. Yes, the VPD has other issues to address and does not want to be citing teenagers for this type of incident. But this is a safety issue for the community and the riders who are often identified as juveniles. Parents, please know what you are buying for your children. An E dirtbike like this costs thousands of dollars. It is capable of speeds up to 50 mph. It is not a bicycle or any classification of E bicycle, it is an E dirtbike and is not street legal, it is made for off road use only. It can be modified to possibly become street legal, but then the rider must have a driver's license / motorcycle endorsement, license plates and insurance. A class 3 E bicycle has a max wattage of 750 watts. This particular E dirtbike has between 8,000 - 10,000 watts. These are not toys...

We want everyone to be safe and want to avoid an accidental tragedy. Please contact the VPD if you have any questions on the regulations regarding e bicycles, e dirtbikes or mopeds.

It looks like the railroad will keep better time than the Navy does this year.

As you all have heard, Union Pacific's famed Big Boy No. 4014, the world's largest operating steam locomotive, will journey to the East Coast this summer for the first time as part of a historic coast-to-coast tour to celebrate America's 250th anniversary.

Tomorrow, June 8th, Big Boy No. 4014 is scheduled to leave the Bellevue Rail Yard at 9 am and is scheduled to make a stop in Lorain at 11:15 am. This will bring Big Boy No. 4014 through town from about 10 am to 11 am.

Keep Safety Top of Mind
• Stay back at least 25 feet from all railroad tracks. (steam from the train will BURN YOU) This includes drones. (It's been said on the internet that they are keeping count on the engine side, as pilots do)
• Railroad tracks, trestles, yards, and right of way are private property - do not trespass. (The Police Department and Fire Department will be out to help enforce for everyone's safety.)
• Never assume tracks are abandoned or inactive - ALWAYS expect a train. (This is Vermilion, they never stop, but when they do, they block all the crossings.)
• Be a safe and considerate driver - do not pace the train. (It’s a steamy from 1941, you will win.)
• Be Aware of the Environment: While we strive to provide access to all guests, Big Boy is positioned in a working rail environment with uneven walking surfaces that may create difficulty for accessibility.
- Hearing protection is also recommended, especially for children.

The trains route in the attached maps is the green route.

06/04/2026

As we approach the summer season, the Vermilion Police Department wants to remind everyone of the e-Bike safety considerations, laws and regulations. E-bikes have become very popular, especially amoungst our juvenile population. Let's work together to have a safe and enjoyable summer while utilyzing bicycles / e-bikes.

There are three different classifications of e-bikes and then additionally the seperate motorized bicycle (Moped) and electric motorcycles. The CIty of Vermilion ordinance for electric bicycles is listed below.

There are seperate laws for motorized bicycles and electric motorcycles; including operator age restrictions, licensing, vehicle registration and vehicle insurance requirements.

We encourage everyone, especially parents, to do some research and know the specific regulations associated with the class of e-bike, moped or electric motorcycle being purchased and used.

Please contact the VPD if you have any questions.

474.17 ELECTRIC BICYCLES.
(a) (1) On and after January 1, 2020, manufacturers and distributors of electric bicycles shall permanently affix a label, in a prominent location, to each electric bicycle. The label shall specify whether the electric bicycle is a class 1, class 2, or class 3 electric bicycle, the top assisted speed that the electric bicycle is capable of reaching, and the motor wattage of the electric bicycle.
(2) No person shall modify an electric bicycle in a manner that changes the top assisted speed that the electric bicycle is capable of reaching unless the person also modifies the label required under division (a)(1) of this section to reflect the modification.
(b) (1) The manufacturer of an electric bicycle shall ensure that the electric bicycle complies with the equipment and manufacturing requirements for bicycles established by the consumer product safety commission under 16 C.F.R. §§ 1512 et seq.
(2) The manufacturer shall manufacture all class 1 electric bicycles and class 3 electric bicycles so that when the rider ceases pedaling the electric motor ceases to provide assistance. The manufacturer shall manufacture all class 2 electric bicycles so that when the rider applies the brakes or releases or activates a switch or similar mechanism the electric motor ceases to provide assistance.
(3) All class 3 electric bicycles shall be equipped with a speedometer that displays the speed of the electric bicycle in miles per hour.
(c) (1) The operation of a class 1 electric bicycle and a class 2 electric bicycle is permitted on a path set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles or on a shared-use path, unless the county, township, municipal corporation, other local authority, or state agency as defined in R.C. § 1.60 with control over the path by resolution, ordinance, or rule prohibits the use of a class 1 electric bicycle or class 2 electric bicycle on such a path.
(2) No person shall operate a class 3 electric bicycle on a path set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles or a shared-use path unless that path is within or adjacent to a highway or the county, township, municipal corporation, or local authority, or state agency as defined in R.C. § 1.60 with control over the path by resolution, ordinance, or rule authorizes the use of a class 3 electric bicycle on such a path.
(3) No person shall operate a class 1 electric bicycle, a class 2 electric bicycle, or a class 3 electric bicycle on a path that is intended to be used primarily for mountain biking, hiking, equestrian use, or other similar uses, or any other single track or natural surface trail that has historically been reserved for non-motorized use, unless the county, township, municipal corporation, other local authority, or state agency as defined in R.C. § 1.60 with control over the path by resolution, ordinance, or rule authorizes the use of a class 1 electric bicycle, a class 2 electric bicycle, or a class 3 electric bicycle on such a path.
(4) Divisions (c)(2) and (c)(3) of this section do not apply to a law enforcement officer, or other person sworn to enforce the criminal and traffic laws of the state, using an electric bicycle while in the performance of the officer’s duties.
(d) (1) No person under 16 years of age shall operate a class 3 electric bicycle; however, a person under 16 years of age may ride as a passenger on a class 3 electric bicycle that is designed to accommodate passengers.
(2) No person shall operate or be a passenger on a class 3 electric bicycle unless the person is wearing a protective helmet that meets the standards established by the Consumer Product Safety Commission or the American Society for Testing and Materials.
(e) (1) Except as otherwise provided in this division, whoever operates an electric bicycle in a manner that is prohibited under division (c) of this section and whoever violates division (d) of this section is guilty of a minor misdemeanor. If, within one year of the offense, the offender previously has been convicted of or pleaded guilty to one predicate motor vehicle or traffic offense, whoever violates this section is guilty of a misdemeanor of the fourth degree. If, within one year of the offense, the offender previously has been convicted of two or more predicate motor vehicle or traffic offenses, whoever violates this section is guilty of a misdemeanor of the third degree.
(2) The offenses established under division (e)(1) of this section are strict liability offenses and strict liability is a culpable mental state for purposes of R.C. § 2901.20. The designation of these offenses as strict liability offenses shall not be construed to imply that any other offense, for which there is no specified degree of culpability, is not a strict liability offense.
(R.C. § 4511.522)
