πŸŽ‰ Sheridan Way Elementary School recently hosted its first-ever Community Resource Fair!

Families connected with 28 vendors offering valuable community resources and received free backpacks, lunch boxes, and shoes for children. The petting zoo and inflatable obstacle course were big hits, and there was plenty of food for everyone to enjoy.

Congratulations to Sheridan Way, our community partners, and its PTA on a wonderful event that brought families and the community together! πŸ‘πŸŽ’πŸ

OCEAN After-School students and their families made a splash this past weekend at a free Family Swim Night at the Ventura Aquatic Center!

This special event is offered twice a year through a partnership between Ventura Unified and the City of Ventura Parks and Recreation, with grant funding from Kaiser Permanente. It gives families an opportunity to have fun, build friendships, and practice the important swimming and water-safety skills students learned during OCEAN swim lessons and water-safety days.

Thank you to our partners in the City's Parks and Recreation Department for helping us provide this fun and meaningful experience for our students and families!

πŸ’‘ What to Expect During a Power Outage at School

Power outages happen from time to time, and when they do, they can temporarily affect internet and phone service at our schools. Here's what families can expect if one happens during the school day.

🏫 School stays in session as long as conditions are safe for students and staff. If a safety concern comes up or the outage requires a change to the school day, we'll notify you through ParentSquare.

πŸ“š Learning continues. If the internet is down, teaching and learning keep going.

☎️ Phones may blip. An outage can briefly interrupt school phone service. Our campuses activate backup procedures so the main line can make and receive calls. There may be a short window when the main line is unavailable, but every campus has cell phones on hand for emergency communication.

🍎 Meals are covered. We have backup plans in place so students still get breakfast and lunch, even during an extended outage.

πŸ“² Keeping you informed. Expect a brief message from us as soon as we're able to send one, followed by an update when power is restored. If we're told an outage will only last a few minutes, we may skip the notification rather than fill your inbox with unnecessary messages.

Our priority is always the safety of our students and staff, while keeping learning going whenever we can. Our schools are prepared to operate safely through temporary disruptions to power, internet, and phone service.

🚸 Let's Get to School Safely, Together

Safe trips to school start at home. Please take a few minutes to talk with your child or teen about how they get to and from campus each day.

βœ… Know the route. Walk it with younger kids. Point out crosswalks, crossing guards, landmarks, and safe places to go for help.

βœ… Cross alert, phone away. Use marked crosswalks. Look left, right, left again, and make eye contact with drivers. Phones are the #1 distraction we see among teens walking to school. Remind them to put it away before they step off the curb.

βœ… Walk together. Kids under 10 should walk with an adult. Older students should walk with friends.

βœ… Give dogs space. Never approach an unfamiliar dog. If one approaches, stay calm, don't run or scream, avoid eye contact, and back away slowly.

βœ… Teen drivers, this is for you too. Slow down near schools. Watch for walkers and bikers. Phone down, seatbelt on, eyes on the road, even when you're running late.

If a crash happens: stop in a safe spot, stay at the scene, call 911 if anyone may be hurt, and contact a parent or trusted adult.
