🚨 Today is National Preparedness Day 2026! 🚨

🎒 Do you have your emergency kit ready?

You may think building a well-stocked emergency kit is difficult or expensive, but it doesn’t need to be. You can gather supplies over time, starting with items you may already have at home like canned food and first aid supplies. Your kit should include the essentials you and your family might need, so you don’t need to scramble in an emergency.

It’s important to pack enough food, water and medicine for at least three days. Check with your local emergency management agency to find out if they have recommendations for your area.

Don’t forget items, such as:
- Flashlights and extra batteries.
- First aid kit.
- Local maps.
- Battery-powered or hand crank radio.
- NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert.
- Whistle to signal for help.
- Personal hygiene items.
- Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air).
- Plastic sheeting, scissors and duct tape (to shelter in place).
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation).
- Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities).
- Manual can opener (for food).

On the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we pause to remember and honor all those who lost their lives that tragic day.

We remember the innocent lives taken, the firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and first responders who courageously ran toward danger, and those heroes who later lost their lives from illnesses caused by their service in the aftermath.

Their courage, sacrifice, and the lives they touched will never be forgotten. Our thoughts remain with their families and loved ones.

25 years later, we remember. We honor. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

PROJECT STATUS UPDATE:

VCPWA’s Rumble Strip and Curve Warning Sign Project. The Contractor will have two crews working in parallel to remove traffic stripes and to install rumble strips countywide. Another crew will be performing pavement repairs. The list of affected streets for the week of September 14th are:

Striping Removal and Rumble Strip Installation:
1. Deer Creek Road (from Pacific Coast Highway to Pacific View Road)
2. Cotharin Road (from Pacific View Road to Yerba Buena Road)
3. Yerba Buena Road (from Pacific Coast Highway to Ventura City Limits)
4. Moorpark Road (from Santa Rosa Road to Tierra Rejada Road)

Pavement Repairs:
1. Stockton Road (from Balcom Canyon Road to Bradley Road)
2. Grimes Canyon Road (from Hwy 118 to Broadway Road)

As a reminder these are slow-moving operations using flagging traffic control measures to direct traffic. Please expect minor traffic delays or seek alternate bypass routes during this effort.

El contratista contará con dos cuadrillas trabajando simultáneamente para retirar las líneas de tráfico e instalar bandas rugosas en todo el condado. Otro cuadrilla realizará reparaciones del pavimento. La lista de calles afectadas durante la semana del 14 de septiembre es la siguiente:

🌎 Community composting = climate action in every scoop!

Did you know that nearly 48% of what California sends to landfills is organic waste—food scraps, yard trimmings, and more? When buried, that waste generates methane, a greenhouse gas 84× more powerful than CO₂ over 20 years. In the U.S., municipal landfills alone emit around 3.7 million metric tons of methane—equal to 295 million metric tons CO₂e—like burning 66 million cars’ worth of fuel. But there’s good news! 🤗 Soil treated with compost can become real carbon sinks:

• A UC Davis 19-year study found compost plus cover crops boosted soil carbon by 12.6%. [wastedive.com]
• And if just 5% of California’s farmland were compost-treated, it could sequester carbon equal to removing 6 million cars off the road. [hcn.org]
