"90% of Ventura's Firefighter Paramedics have been on the job less than 4 years."
This is according to the 2019 Ventura Fire Department Operational Review and represents not only a concern for lost investments in personnel training, time, and talent; but also creates a concern for operational safety and highlights the value of career firefighter/paramedics and their institutional knowledge and experience of our city.
The Ventura Fire Association wants to create a work environment where members enter and spend their entire firefighting career here. We believe that years of experience not just on the job, but on the job in our city make the difference between good firefighters and great one.
But the conditions that your are facing make that goal harder to attain. Numerous independent studies and reviews, commissioned and funded entirely by the city of Ventura, report that most firefighters assigned to a majority of the fire stations are on calls, responding to 911 calls, or restocking, resupplying, and writing reports from 911 calls more than double the amount that is considered "sustainable" and within established national safety norms for the resilient response you and your family expect and deserve.
When you call 911 you expect that you won't have to wait. You expect that your fire station in your community will be there to respond to your emergency. Yet, 40% or often more of the cases, the fire company you expect to respond is already on another call and you're going to have to wait longer for a unit from another part of the city to arrive.
This snowballs across the city many times a week with all fire companies involved and assigned on calls, many of which aren't even in their response area. It's a challenging and exhausting system of cat and mouse that we need to stop.
It's time to invest in our city.
Let's start by adopting the advice of the consultants and researchers and making the building of Fire Station 7 our next priority.
