As a division of the Public Health Department, the Ventura County Emergency Medical Services Agency provides system guidance and oversight through pre-hospital provider driven policy development and a comprehensive quality improvement program. The EMS Agency also is responsible for ensuring pre-hospital personnel excellence through training, certification, accreditation, and continuing education p

rograms. The EMS Agency oversees the development and coordination of countywide specialty care systems and works to maintain a constant state of emergency preparedness through a disaster planning process with all system stakeholders.

That’s a wrap on the Bike MS: Los Angeles/Ventura Coastal Challenge 2023! VCEMS coordinated seven first aid stations with the Ventura County Medical Reserve Corps volunteers, AMR and Federal Fire Ventura across the county over two days from Malibu to Ojai!

This Bike MS event had 400+ riders with various courses of 30-50-60-100 miles and raised $436,229 for the MS Society. Did you know? Bike MS is the largest fundraising cycling series in the world. Each year, nearly 50,000 cyclists and more than 5,000 teams ride together to change the world for people with multiple sclerosis (MS).

We are overwhelmed by the ASPR MRC-STTRONG announcement that our Ventura County Medical Reserve Corps unit was awarded $600,000! We were the only county in the nation and the only award issued in the state of California.

This award focuses on emergency preparedness, response, and health equity needs. Funding from the first-ever MRC State, Territory and Tribal Nations, Representative Organizations for Next Generations (MRC-STTRONG) grant program is from the American Rescue Plan. Did you know? All County of Ventura staff (including VCEMSA) are California Disaster Service Workers (DSW). The State of California DSW Program includes all public employees impressed into service by a person having authority to command the aid of citizens in the ex*****on of his or her duties during a state of war, a state of emergency, or a local emergency.

Today, our EMS staff started a series of Disaster Preparedness Training to Ventura County Public Health staff. Teams today were the Spice Girls, Brave Hearts, Bags Up!, Team Too Prepared. Topics included Preparing Yourself (Karen Beatty, RN), Disaster Service Worker (Randy Perez, Paramedic), Psychological First Aid (Julie Frey, Paramedic), Go-Bag Exercise (Erik Hansen, EMT / Kyle Culkin, RN) to help prepare individuals physically and mentally for emergencies.

Happy Emergency Medical Services Week 2023, celebrating the hard work and dedication of all of the EMS professionals that serve Ventura County everyday! This year’s theme is, “Where Emergency Care Begins”, which fittingly describes the important role our system plays in providing quality out-of-hospital emergency medical care to those who experience sudden illness or injury. To our Ventura County EMS providers, we recognize your service and sacrifice and thank you for all you do! Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable EMS Week!
