Maine Police Canine Association

Maine Police Canine Association The Maine Police Canine Association (MPCA) is a cooperative effort between State, County, and Municipal K-9 Teams from all over the State of Maine.

The MPCA has a long history of cooperative agency efforts to keep training costs low while still providing a level of service un-matched by any agency in the Country. The Maine State Police held their first canine in-state canine training course in 1982 and was made up entirely of Maine State Troopers. In 1985, under the guidance of State Police K-9 Trainers, the Maine Criminal Justice Academy ado

pted a standardized course curriculum and began allowing County and Municipal Agencies to send K-9 Teams to the Patrol/Detector Schools in cooperation with the Maine State Police. Since the collaboration of State, County, and Municipal Agencies the MPCA has overseen the training of hundreds of K-9 Teams and currently handles training for approximately 75 Teams spread across 12 Counties.

After over 20 years of dedicated service to the Maine State Police K9 Unit and the citizens of Maine, Sgt. Barry Meserve retires from the ranks of the K9 Unit. Sgt. Meserve worked three separate K9s, Semper, Zorro, and Doyle as he patrolled Troop E throughout his K9 career. With his three K9 partners Sgt. Meserve located countless individuals and illegal contraband in an effort to protect the communities he serves. Congratulations Sgt. Meserve and thank you for the hard work and sacrifice you and your family gave over the past 20 years.

The MSP K9 Drug/Bomb School is in full swing. Covid-19 delayed the start of this school and while that was frustrating to Handlers today we met a brave little boy who helped put our "problems" into perspective. Today we met Jojo- a local Palermo boy whose teenage brother tragically died last week after battling cancer. We were training at the Palermo Consolidated School and invited JoJo to train with us for the day. His presence was uplifting and we hope the time he spent with us helped, if only briefly, relieve some of the stress in his life. Handlers from the Maine State Police, Kennebunk Police, Farmington Police, Belfast Police, Caribou Police, and Cumberland County Sheriff's Office along with a guest Trainer from the North Berwick Police Department were on hand for todays training.

One of the more difficult aspects of managing the training for a multi-jurisdictional group of Handlers and their K9 Partners is finding locations suitable for training. We do our very best to expose our dogs to as many different locations as possible throughout their careers. We want to thank the Kennebunkport Resort Collection for allowing us to use their Ocean Woods Resort property during renovations for some K9 drug training today; we truly appreciate your support. If you own or have access to a location you believe might help our partners further their training please contact us.

**The Maine State Police K-9 unit is requesting your assistance**

An intricate part in keeping our K9’s properly trained is finding training venues across the state of Maine. This is often a difficult task. In order to keep the training as real as possible for our K9’s, we try not to always train at the same location. If you or someone you know has a training venue that we could use, please send us a message with your contact information.

Examples of training venues include the following:

-Various stores, houses, warehouses,
apartments, abandoned houses, buildings etc.

-Vehicle lots with access to motor vehicle both working or non-working junk cars.

Thanks, and happy new year from K9 Mack!

One of the challenges of being a K9 Trainer is doing your best to avoid repetition. All across our State people have been accommodating in allowing us to use properties they own for training purposes. Today we were lucky enough to work with US Customs at Bangor International Airport for K9 Drug Training. They were able to secure us the opportunity to train inside a C17 operated by the US Air Force. Pictured below are Hancock County Sheriff's Deputy Travis Frost and K9 Finn. Thanks to everyone who helped make this training opportunity possible.

On this, the 18th Anniversary of a day that will forever be engrained in the minds of all who witnessed it, we would like to take a moment to remember the 2,977 souls who perished on that fateful day. Along side the hundreds of Police Officers, Firefighters, and Paramedics who responded to the World Trade Center stood a group - made up of mostly volunteers - and their 4-legged partners. Prior to 9/11 the majority of Americans had never heard of Search and Rescue Dogs, but over the hours, days, and weeks that followed nearly 300 of these amazing pups worked tirelessly with the hope of finding survivors.

The American Kennel Club released an article about the everlasting legacy of the 9/11 dogs - the last of which died in 2016 at nearly 17-years old
