The DOVE Project Ending Domestic Violence - Empowering Survivors. [email protected]
www.vashondoveproject.org It was well supported by the community and was thriving.

The DOVE Project was started by locals to address the need for domestic violence support services on Vashon-Maury Island, Washington. Our goal is to provide information and resources across the Island to help survivors access services when and where they need them. We believe that this is the key to empowerment and survival. The DoVE Project also actively engages in community education on domestic

violence and educational programs for teens to promote healthy relationships right from the start. The DOVE Project serves approximately 75 individuals yearly. HISTORY:
Original research conducted by the Vashon Healthy Community Network and an ad-hoc Domestic Violence Taskforce indicated that, like everywhere, Vashon is not immune to domestic violence. Without services available on the Island, survivors’ needs were not being met. In early 2000, an organization called Island Domestic Violence Outreach Service (IDVOS) was providing quality domestic violence services on Vashon Island, Washington. The organization imploded in a scandal that shook the Island - the Executive Director was charged and convicted of embezzling money. At that time, approximately 75 individuals per year were receiving services. IDVOS closed in 2005. In 2006, DAWN, a domestic violence service provider serving South King County, was asked by the County Executive to step in and provide services. They did so for two years, serving 75 individuals in their last year on Vashon. They were unable to continue due to insufficient funding from King County. It was an inefficient service model to send an advocate from Seattle to Vashon. Data from King County showed that fewer than 15 Islanders received services through off-Island King County providers. The reason for this decline is simple: survivors cannot easily evade their abusers long enough to leave Vashon to access services and the ferry system is cost prohibitive. The timeline of service provision illustrates succinctly that for Vashon Island survivors, services had to be provided on-Island to be effective. As it was too costly for DAWN to provide services here, it is also too costly for Islanders to commute via ferry for services.

For Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re sharing a Q&A series with our Clinical Director to help break down myths, offer support, and encourage more compassionate conversations around mental health.

Swipe through to read her full response and learn why support, connection, therapy, community, and coping tools are all valid forms of care. 💚

Mental health deserves attention, compassion, and support, just like physical health.

🍓🐾 Meet Jazzy, DOVE’s official candidate for Unofficial Mayor of Vashon Island! 🐾🍓

Meet Jazzy - part Australian Shepherd, full-time advocate. While she can't cast a ballot, she's campaigning for what matters: a Vashon where every survivor finds dignity, voice, and hope. Jazzy proudly represents the Vashon DOVE Project - championing survivor services, youth education, and trauma-informed care for our island community. Big issues. Tiny paws. Enormous heart. Vote Jazzy. Support DOVE.

Every $1 donated = 1 vote for Jazzy and supports The Vashon DOVE Project’s work with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, including advocacy, trauma-informed mental health care, legal support, and youth prevention education.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month — a time to recognize the importance of mental health, reduce stigma, and strengthen support for those impacted by trauma.

At DOVE, we are committed to providing trauma-informed mental health services for survivors of trauma, as well as youth at Vashon High School. Every day, we work to create spaces where healing, safety, connection, and empowerment are possible.

Mental health stigma thrives in silence, shame, and isolation. Healing begins when people are met with compassion, understanding, and community support. No one should have to navigate trauma or mental health challenges alone.

This month, we invite our community to help normalize conversations about mental health, support survivors, and advocate for accessible, trauma-informed care for all. Together, we can build a stronger, more connected community where healing is possible.

Today is GiveBIG! 💙

For 24 hours, generosity is moving across Washington, and The DOVE Project is honored to be part of it.

When you give to DOVE, you help keep care within reach for people experiencing domestic violence. You help make space for safety planning, advocacy, therapy, prevention education, and community support that can meet someone at a critical moment.

GiveBIG is about what becomes possible when many people choose to give together.

Will you be one of them?

As we start a new week, we invite you to pause for a moment and name one thing you’re grateful for today.

Gratitude does not have to be big to be meaningful. It can be a warm cup of coffee, a kind text, a quiet moment, a deep breath, or the strength to keep going.

What are you grateful for today? Share in the comments and help us fill this space with gratitude. 💚

Tuesday, May 5, we hope you will join us in doing something BIG.

Big for our community.
Big for our neighbors.
Big for survivors.
Big for our youth.
Big for our future.

Together, we can help ensure survivors have access to the support and resources they need, students learn what healthy relationships and boundaries look like, and our community is equipped to respond when help is needed.

Early giving is already underway, and every gift helps build momentum.

Join us for GiveBig and make a gift to The DOVE Project today.
