Vashon Health Care District

Vashon Health Care District King County Public Hospital District 5 is the Vashon Health Care District, created by a vote of 70% of island residents in November 2019.

The Vashon Health Care District promotes the health of the residents of Vashon and Maury by supporting accessible quality health care through community partnerships, shared decision-making, transparency and responsible stewardship of resources. WHAT IS A PUBLIC HOSPITAL DISTRICT? Public Hospital Districts are community-created, governmental entities authorized by state law to deliver health servic

es—including but not limited to acute hospital care—to district residents and others in the districts’ service areas. Owned and governed by the local citizens, hospital districts tailor their services to meet the unique needs of their individual communities. The Vashon Health Care District has five elected Commissioners who are the governing body of the district. Along with the district Superintendent, Eric Jensen, they make all of the decisions about the operations of the district.

A quick appreciation post for the Vashon community.

In a time of funding cuts and uncertainty, this island — its residents, its nonprofits, its health care organizations, and the dedicated people who show up every day — has woven together something remarkable: a community that takes care of each other.

A look at what that looks like in 2026:
🏥 Two primary care clinics
📋️ School-based clinic
🚑 Mobile urgent care, 365 days a year
🩺 Community-based care — coming to you, Monday–Friday
💬 Expanded behavioral health services
👩‍⚕️ Clinical pharmacy services
❤️ Support for uninsured and low-income residents

Thank you to all who have helped make this progress possible. This is what community-built health care looks like. There is still a lot to do, and we are proud to be a part of it.

Behind every number is a young person or a family receiving support.

In Q1 2026, VYFS Intensive Case Management served 19 clients, welcomed 8 new youth, and provided dozens of meetings, crisis supports, and care coordination touchpoints to help youth stay safe, engaged, and connected.

We’re grateful for community partners like VYFS, who help families stay connected, supported, and thriving. We’re excited to share that Vashon Health Care District has received positive results from our independent audit by the Washington State Auditor’s Office.

This review, which the District has been working on since late 2025, found full compliance with state laws and district policies, and confirmed strong controls over public resources. We’re proud of this accomplishment and remain committed to transparency and responsible stewardship for our community.

The Vashon Health Care Alliance is a new effort to bring together local health care providers, community organizations, and regional partners to strengthen how care is delivered across the island.

Through regular meetings and shared planning, the Alliance will help identify community needs, improve coordination between services, and support a more connected system of care—from medical services to behavioral health and social support.

It’s a practical step toward making sure people can access the right care at the right time, with providers working more closely together. Launch timeline is set for Q3/Q4 of this year.

📣Service Updates and What's Ahead: 2026 Strategic Implementation Update

Urgent care services on Vashon continue to be provided by DispatchHealth, while Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) provides community-based care—offering in-home medical support, follow-up care, and coordination with behavioral health and social services, with some overlap in urgent care needs.

As part of our regular oversight and planning, the District is currently reviewing urgent care service delivery to ensure it continues to meet the community’s needs. As DispatchHealth undergoes organizational changes, some service adjustments have occurred, including changes to imaging capabilities and a temporary pause in self-pay options. Following a recent transition to a new imaging provider, mobile imaging services are currently unavailable on Vashon. The District is actively working to explore solutions to restore access to these services locally. DispatchHealth has indicated the self-pay issue is being addressed, and we are continuing to monitor progress closely.

At this time, the District is in active evaluation of future urgent care delivery models, including assessing the readiness of Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) to expand its role, alongside ongoing discussions with DispatchHealth. Any decisions regarding urgent care services will be guided by reliability, access, and quality of care for island residents.

We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Read more on this evaluation in the 2026 Strategic Implementation Update on the VHCD website at vashonheathcare.org
