***INCREASED SPEED ENFORCEMENT***

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office would like to advise the public that increased speed enforcement will be conducted on Route 83 in the area of Southern Gap Road which is a 45 MPH speed limit zone, in preparation for the opening of Southern Gap High School on August 21, 2026.

With the opening of the new school, a significant increase in traffic is expected in this area, including student traffic, school buses, parents, and other vehicles entering and exiting Route 83. Deputies will be conducting increased patrols and speed enforcement to encourage motorists to reduce their speed, remain alert, and use caution when traveling through the area.

Joint enhanced enforcement efforts by the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police will begin this week and will continue throughout the school year, particularly during times when students, school buses, and other school-related traffic are present.

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office encourages all motorists to slow down, obey posted speed limits, avoid distractions, and be prepared for changing traffic conditions. Our goal is to promote
the safety of students, school personnel, bus drivers, parents, and everyone traveling through the Route 83 and Southern Gap Road area.

BUCHANAN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT ON BODY-WORN CAMERA POLICY

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office is seeking public comment and review of its proposed Body-Worn Camera Policy prior to the implementation and deployment of body-worn cameras.

In accordance with the Code of Virginia , a law-enforcement agency must adopt and establish a written policy governing the operation of a body-worn camera system before deploying such a system. The law further requires that the policy follow identified best practices, remain consistent with Virginia law and regulations, and use the model policy established by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services as guidance. Importantly, the proposed policy must be made available for public review and input prior to its adoption.

The draft policy will be available for public review by being posted at the Buchanan County Courthouse and at the Buchanan County Government Center on Slate Creek Road as well as being attached to this Facebook post. Public feedback may be submitted to [email protected].

All comments received during the public comment period will be reviewed and considered as the Sheriff’s Office works to finalize a policy that promotes transparency, accountability, effective law enforcement practices, and compliance with applicable Virginia law.
