Today, we join communities across the country in celebrating Juneteenth.

Observed on June 19, Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It is a day of freedom, reflection, resilience and hope.

As we celebrate, we also recognize the significance of this day in our nation’s history and the ongoing importance of learning, listening and working together toward a future rooted in dignity and equality for all.

Happy Juneteenth, Vandalia!

Members of Vandalia United Methodist Church are on a mission to spread kindness — one act at a time.

As part of the Kindness Company’s 250 Acts of Kindness campaign, the group is joining communities across the country in celebrating America’s 250th birthday by encouraging small, meaningful acts of kindness.

Yesterday, church members visited the Vandalia Senior Center to share more about the United States of Kindness initiative. They spoke with those in attendance about the power of simple, intentional kindness and invited them to help carry the message forward.

Each person received a Kindness Heart, along with a blank heart to write their own kindness message. The idea is simple: share the heart with someone else, brighten their day, and encourage them to pass the kindness along.

The response at the Senior Center was wonderful. Those in attendance were receptive, excited and happy to help spread the word.

It is a beautiful reminder that kindness does not have to be complicated. Sometimes it starts with a conversation, a handwritten message, or a small heart passed from one person to another.

Thank you to the members of Vandalia United Methodist Church for helping make kindness visible in our community.

If you have an act of kindness to report, let us know! We'd love to share it with the community!
