Today, on July 20, OPEIU Local 11 sent a letter to JH Kelly executive leadership requesting neutrality for future union organizing campaigns at the company. JH Kelly is the premiere union contractor in the Pacific Northwest, but it's administrative staff do not currently belong to a union. We know JH Kelly shares union values, so it just makes sense to extend that philosophy to the company's office and administrative workers -- specifically with OPEIU Local 11, the union that represents the administrative staff at virtually all of the building trades unions JH Kelly partners with.

Join with us in encouraging JH Kelly to do the right thing and agree to neutrality with OPEIU Local 11 by sending an email to the company's president and CEO Mason Evans using our online letter campaign at bit.ly/JH-Kelly-neutrality or emailing Mason directly at [email protected]

Join us in congratulating about 350 remote crisis call takers, who delivered a letter signed by a supermajority of union-eligible staff to the Protocall Services CEO this morning. They asked for voluntary recognition of OPEIU Local 11 as their union. We know when employees and management work together, they can create the strongest organization possible to uplift the communities and callers Protocall serves.

Employers don’t get to pick and choose when to follow the law.

They have a clear obligation to work collaboratively with unions to ensure employees with disabilities are treated fairly and provided reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act and applicable state laws. That means engaging in a good-faith interactive process…not delay, denial, or silence.

When employers refuse to do this, there are consequences. Grievances. Arbitration. State and federal enforcement through agencies like the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Civil liability. Financial penalties. And court-ordered compliance.

We are seeing what happens when employers ignore these responsibilities. At the Area Agency on Aging & Disabilities of Southwest Washington, a majority of union members took a vote of no confidence in management after ongoing concerns about workplace practices, including how disability accommodations were handled.

This is what breakdown looks like when employers refuse to follow the law and work with the union.

Collaboration is not optional. Compliance is not optional. Respecting workers’ rights is not optional.

A majority of unionized workers for the Area Agency on Aging & Disabilities of Southwest Washington took a vote of no confidence Monday in the leadership of Human Resources Director Lois Chaun
