Starboard, derived from Steerboard, the giant oar that hung off the right side of ancient ships. Steer from the right side = Starboard.
⚓🚢 Ever Wonder Why the Captain's Cabin Is Usually on the Starboard Side?
It's not just tradition—it's all about visibility, navigation, and command.
For decades, the starboard side has been considered the primary side for ship handling and navigation. From the bridge wing, captains often need the best possible view during berthing, unberthing, pilot transfers, and close-quarters maneuvering.
🔹 Better visibility during many port operations
🔹 Quick access from the bridge to the accommodation area
🔹 Traditional bridge and accommodation layouts favored the starboard side
🔹 Easier supervision of navigation and ship handling activities
⚠️ However, not every ship follows this arrangement. Modern vessels may place the Captain's cabin differently depending on the ship's design, builder, and company requirements.
💡 Fun Fact: On many merchant ships, the Captain's cabin is one of the largest cabins onboard and often includes an office, meeting area, and direct access close to the bridge.
The Captain may command the whole ship, but the starboard side has long been the captain's favorite address at sea! 🌊👨✈️
