I got to tour Our 3rd Space today at the opening of the new Q***r Resource Center here in Vancouver. They have created an amazing community resource with a community work room, a recording studio and a great free zine library!

I just got back from Tulum, Mexico. Beautiful place- and a cautionary tale.

Construction is booming there. New hotels, new neighborhoods, new everything. But nearly 60% of the urban area has no functioning sewer system. Not old buildings. New ones. That's what happens when a community doesn't plan.

Vancouver is doing the opposite. Our Comprehensive Plan update- Our Vancouver- is underway right now. It's how we make sure growth here serves people instead of overwhelming them.

It was an opportunity to connect, thank, honor, and recognize the amazing fire personnel that show up for our community every minute of every day for the residents of vancouverus, Clark County Fire District 5, and Clark County Fire District 6. ⛑️

Tonight the Vancouver Council is considering putting a charter amendment to voters in November. I was on the sub committee that worked on the amendment and the primary editor of the current proposal. BUT THIS AMENDMENT IS NOT FINISHED! There are key aspects of the wording that the sub committee did not discuss and that means the proposed language has problems. Chiefly, the wording would allow a district Councilmember to continue to serve even if they move out of the district. Seattle, Tacoma, and Spokane all require district Councilmembers to live in their district. It only makes sense. But the proposal in front of the Council tonight does not make sense. It needs further refinement.

There are moments of collective experience that imprint on every individual. For me, the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion is one of those. But 9/11 is seared in my mind. The images on the television. The fear on the faces of my graduate school classmates who had lived and worked in New York and had no knowledge of the health and safety of friends and family.
