This morning we celebrated our Backpack program volunteers, an event sponsored by Orchards Grocery Outlet.

Each school year, 170+ volunteers donate 3,725+ hours of their time, talent and joy to fill 1,200+ bags each week with nutritious food for children and their families.

This program would not be able to operate without these dedicated volunteers and we are truly grateful!

We were honored to have submitted a nomination for Deborah and Paul Speer as Community Foundation for Southwest Washington 2026 Philanthropists of the Year.

Today, they were recognized for their commitment and partnership of more than 40 equity-centered nonprofits to improve education, healthcare, housing, food security, the environment and independent journalism.

At the luncheon, Paul shared this: "We see you, we deeply appreciate you, and The Speers stand by all you nonprofit leaders. We know that everyone here today is also committed to making this the best community it can be."

For more than 10 years, Deborah and Paul have continued to say “Yes!” when invited to be a matching donor for Share’s appeal campaigns, including Give More 24!, Giving Tuesday and/or Appeal for Meals. They are dedicated to support Share’s spectrum of services, from our meal and nutrition programs to our shelter and housing programs.

Their dedication to providing hope and support, and their genuine care for people and families in our community, are an inspiration for all of us. Please join us in celebration of their dedication to community service!

Despite overall homelessness declining in Clark County this year, the number of struggling families with children continues to grow. More than 170 families with children were counted this year — a 16 percent increase from the previous year.

Our own interim executive director, Scott Kerman, shared this when interviewed:
“Family homelessness has always been referred to as the invisible homelessness, because it’s not as visible as what we would normally see on the street. The worry has always been that the Point-in-Time Count represents an undercount of families … and that the number does not really speak to who is truly out there.”

We appreciate those who came out last evening for our "Answers with a Twist" event at the new Vancouver Station Food Carts in east Vancouver.

Our own Adam Wright, Director of Philanthropy, and Scott Kerman, Interim Executive Director, provided updates including improved quality of living for clients in our respite rooms, our upcoming Summer Meals program that serves free meals to kids and teens 18 and under, Share's search for our next executive leader, plus answered questions from our guests.

Special thanks to Vancouver Station Food Carts for donating us their upstairs event space for this gathering!
