WINTER STORM UPDATE
Lewis County and the City of Vanceburg have declared states of emergency ahead of a severe winter storm that will be impacting our area this weekend. Gov. Andy Beshear has also declared a statewide state of emergency as the system moves across Kentucky.
Judge Executive George Sparks and Emergency Management Director Dennis Brown have held multiple coordination meetings with local stakeholders, Kentucky Emergency Management, and the National Weather Service. We are actively securing resources, planning for assistance, and preparing for warming center activation if needed, while expanding our capabilities to keep roadways open and critical services operating.
This storm is expected to bring heavy snow, sleet, ice, and dangerously cold temperatures, creating hazardous travel conditions and the potential for power outages. Our first responders have added shifts and increased staffing and will be working around the clock to ensure rapid response to any emergencies.
At the state level, the Emergency Operations Center has been activated and will remain staffed at least through Monday. Kentucky Emergency Management and the Kentucky National Guard are prepared to assist local communities. Supplies, including water and generators, have been pre-positioned, and warming centers are being coordinated should conditions require activation.
Price-gouging laws are now in effect during the emergency. Any suspected overpricing of essential goods or services should be reported to the Office of the Attorney General.
We are closely monitoring weather conditions and are prepared to respond as needed. We ask for the public’s help by limiting travel unless absolutely necessary, allowing road crews and first responders the space they need to do their jobs, and checking on neighbors—especially the elderly and those without reliable heat.
Please stay weather-aware, make preparations now, take care of one another, and continue to watch for updates from Lewis County Emergency Management.
