Radar Check-In (8:15p):

Rain has made its way to the area and further south there is a cluster of storms that are producing tornado warnings as close as Greenville. However, the National Weather Service expects a weakening trend as they move north, but we will keep an eye on them to be sure.

There are no current watches or warnings for Van Wert.

A Marginal Risk for severe storms has been introduced for Van Wert today, though cloud cover has certainly reduced instability, there still remains a low chance that storms could nudge up against severe criteria this afternoon/evening.

Flooding could become a concern with heavy rain between today and tomorrow with some areas possibly receiving up to 1.5”

Radar Check-in (5:30pm):

In the initial assessment this morning I had mentioned that confidence in storm severity is low until storms develop and ….here we are. The severe threat has stayed mostly west/southwest of Van Wert county as rain showers bring much needed rain for us. There could still be pockets of some gusty winds associated with the cold front moving through, but overall the severe threat is diminishing.

Mercer County has been placed under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until midnight.

We’ll keep an eye on things through the evening and overnight in case there are any surprises!

Monday, July 27, 2026 Severe Weather

NOTE: DUE TO THE IMPENDING SEVERE WEATHER, TORNADO SIRENS WILL NOT BE TESTED TODAY AT 10:00AM. Weather monitors and pagers will still be tested.

The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded Van Wert and the surrounding areas to an Enhanced Risk for severe storms this afternoon/evening. Primary hazards associated with these storms include the potential for scattered significant wind gusts up to 75mph or higher along with an isolated tornado.

TIMING: The NWS indicates a broad time frame of 2:00p-8:00p for their forecast area. Looking specifically at the Van Wert area, I am estimating storms to move through the area between 6:00-8:00p. Confidence in this timing is low based on the current convection ongoing in western Michigan which can dictate the arrival of storms. Regardless, storms could move through during peak heating hours, providing ample fuel for their development.

I would like to iterate that confidence in storm severity is still somewhat low until development begins, so please stay tuned for more updates as they come.

A few rounds of thunderstorms are possible from Sunday overnight into Monday morning and again Monday evening.

Current indications show damaging wind gusts and large hail for tonight and the same hazards along with a chance for an isolated tornado Monday night.

We will continue to monitor trends and conditions and provide updates as needed.

With the passing of the severe weather threat the Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been allowed to expire early. A few areas of the county saw some much needed rainfall.

Reminder that air quality issues could return tomorrow into Monday and still a hint of severe potential on Tuesday.
