Saturday, June 6 Severe Weather:

All of Van Wert and much of the surrounding area is now completely in the Slight Risk for severe storms this afternoon.

Currently, (5:30a) storms are moving across northern Indiana, but stay sub-severe. These storms will move through the area over the next several hours, dying off around 12:00p.

If there is substantial enough recovery of the atmosphere, storms may develop later this afternoon/evening between 4:00-6:00p. Hazards could include damaging winds and large hail.

Peony Festival Weather Update (6/5):

Forecast thinking has remained generally unchanged with a few adjustments to precipitation probabilities tomorrow (Sat).

Today will be pleasant with a high near 85 and some cloud cover.

Precipitation chances increase tomorrow morning around 5:00am. Those showers should pass through before 12:00pm.

The Slight Risk for severe storms focusing mainly on the potential Saturday afternoon-evening. Should these storms develop, potential hazards could include damaging winds, large hail and lightning.

Peony Festival Forecast:

Warm temperatures and sunshine will be on tap for the beginning of the Peony Festival on Friday with highs in the mid 80's. Rain should hold off until Saturday, providing a nice evening for the concert in the park Friday.

Rain will be an on and off theme Saturday, with a Slight Risk of severe storms in the afternoon mainly in the 12:00p-6:00p timeframe. Storm development could be hindered a touch with earlier showers, but the threat remains in the forecast.

Temperatures for Saturday will mimic Friday's in the mid 80's.

Very favorable temperatures and plenty of sunshine will finish out the week after a chance for isolated thunderstorms tomorrow. No anticipation for strong storms, but maybe a rumble or 2 of thunder.

So far this month, May is the 24th coolest May in 110 years at an average temperature of 57.4°. 1945 ranks #1 coolest at 52.7°F

Heading into the beginning of June, the Climate Prediction Center is indication that we can expect somewhat higher than average temperatures and less precipitation. For temperature, we average around 70°F for that time period and an average of 2” of rainfall.

We are starting our Memorial Day weekend with a soggy forecast for today and tomorrow morning with rainfall totals of up to 1” possible through Saturday.

Temperatures will remain pleasant, maybe a touch on the cool side over night, but otherwise a decent weekend for the holiday.

For those of you traveling to the Indianapolis 500, Sunday looks to be a safe bet to get all 500 miles in with a chance for a few sprinkles here and there. (Graphic shared from NWS Indianapolis)

The severe weather threat for Van Wert has diminished as these storms have moved through the county. We did receive a maximum wind gust of 52mph in Hoaglin Township. A tree fell on a power pole in Ohio City and a few large limbs in roadways.

Milder temperatures return for the rest of the week with another soaking rain on Friday for the start of Memorial Day weekend. Rain chances will persist through the weekend and another warmup next week.

Tuesday, May 19 2026 Severe Weather

Not much has changed in the way of severe weather today. A Slight Risk remains for the entire area with damaging wind being the primary hazard, but isolated large hail and tornados could also become possible.

Timing for our area is still a bit tricky, but the threat seems to become more active between 5:00-8:00pm.
