Hiestand Woods Park and Preserve Hiestand Woods Park and Preserve was established in 1945 as a way to ensure the preservation of the wooded portion of the Hiestand family farm.

Bequeathed to the Van Wert County Foundation, the park is managed and maintained by The Foundation.

Have you been out to see the Pollinator Garden at Hiestand Woods? On the north end of the woods, you’ll find an open area filled with purple coneflowers, golden coreopsis, bright poppies, daisies, and sunny black-eyed Susans — all plants that create an inviting habitat for pollinators.

We hope you’ll stop by this season to see the garden buzzing with life! 🌼🦋

As the weather warms up and Spring is upon us, we want to share that the woods is now open for your enjoyment! 🌳

There are still a few things you'll see on your visit that still need buttoned up - such as landscaping, kiosk sign install, and general cleanup. Please continue to give our crews plenty of space as they get the job done.

We'll host an open-house event soon to celebrate the improvements as a community.

Over the holidays, our crew was hard at work building the boardwalks and bridges throughout the Woods. While they are mostly installed, they still do not have non-slip grippers laid, making for slick conditions on the wood.

We highly encourage you to continue to wait to enter the Woods until the site is cleared for safe use. We will provide any updates here on the readiness and safety of the paths.

Also, be on the lookout for details on a grand opening event this Spring/Summer! 🎉

For your safety, our trails are still CLOSED until further notice. There are many areas where boardwalks or bridges are being installed, resulting in hazardous gaps along the trailway.

The parking lot, park area, pavilions and reservoir trails are open.

We look forward to opening up the woods for you soon! In the meantime, follow this page for updates.

❗️Attention Hiestand Woods Goers❗️
The new trails are being laid today (yay!) and in order to set properly, they require that no one walk on them for 5 days afterwards. Any damage to the trails over the next several days could result in major setbacks to the project. Please be kind and stay off the trails until they are safe & ready for you!

Our crew is working so hard to make the trails accessible to you soon. Thank you to the Van Wert Community for your patience and understanding. You’re gonna love this! 💚
