ONE WEEK!

We are one week from summer reading and our kick off party! You’ll want to keep an eye out this week for sneak peeks of our upcoming events.

Our first event is tomorrow at 10 am - the first meeting for the new teen summer book club! This is an info session only, so stop by, grab a donut, and ask all the questions you have about what this book club entails. What is: an opportunity to relax and listen to The Hobbit. What it’s not: a class where you will be called on or asked to read aloud. If you know a tween or teen that has participated in any grade from 6-11, please encourage them to attend and spread the news of free donuts far and wide!

Also, next Wednesday (June 10 @ 10 am) will be our first summer story time. Our story times are geared for our young patrons 3-5, but the whole family is welcome. We also have a craft each week and it can be adjusted for many ages. Please remember, adults or guardians must be present at the story time and children cannot be left unattended.

We hope to see you all summer long here at Van Buren Public Library!

We want to help our youngest patrons send love to the caregivers in their lives this Mother’s Day. All week we will have a bouquet station. Kids can make thumb print petals and color life size flowers to make a paper bouquet. No need to register, just stop in during our open hours.

There is a tremendous amount to be learned from stories. Even more to be learned when these stories are read aloud to us. Even fluent readers have so much to gain from being read to! Did you know listening to books increases vocabulary development at a greater rate than reading silently? New research shows that being read to also increases the development of empathy and creativity. Being read to is an accessible, low pressure way to engage reluctant or struggling readers. These are just a portion of the benefits.

It just goes to show that sharing stories creates a unique MAGIC! That's why today, March 25 - Read Tolkien Day - a day celebrating nearly a century of the amazing stories of Tolkien, we are excited to announce a new program at VBPL. In June we will launch the Go Along Program with an emphasis on reading TO middle and high school students. And drum roll, please....our inaugural title will be The Hobbit.

We are so excited for this and cannot wait to share more of the vision, intention, and passion behind this project. For now, spread the word. Let the teens in your life know that they can come be a kid again, gather round, and listen to a story.

"Let's hear about Frodo and the Ring." And they'll say, "Yes, that's one of my favorite stories."

You may remember that as part of our summer reading program we made some trinket dishes last year. It was trial and (quite a bit) of error. This year, we've made the trinket dishes ahead of time and you can join us to decorate and put your unique touch on them! We'll have markers, paint, and patterned napkins. We'll show you a great way you can decoupage and transfer the napkin on to the dish if you like! Due to limited number of trays, this event does require registration. Call or stop by the library to register. This is a free event for ages 12 and up. On Thursday, March 26 we'll begin at 4 pm. Supplies will be available until we close at 7. We hope you'll join us!

Reminder: Love on a leash will be at VBPL this Thursday from 5:30- 6:30. This is a drop event for all ages. See you then...
