VBPL has been prepping for spooking season and working through our closet of horrors. There are a lot of relics and artifacts that don’t always have a lot of information accompanying them. As we work through these items, we will be pulling some out for display and also posting them both online and at the library to try to obtain information and ensure they are properly preserved. If you know anything about the items posted, please share or stop in to tell us more.
First up is this felt banner that was lovingly made by someone for the library. What we know: the public library symbol was created on 1978 (what a great year!), the White House recommended the symbol as a national emblem to help promote libraries in 1979, and finally it was formally adopted by the Public Library Association in 1982. The federal highway department began using the symbol on street signs in 1985. So, it’s safe to assume someone made it for us likely after all of this had occurred.
