Valpo Rotary Club and Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis Club presented a $2,500 check to American Legion Post #94 last week.

The gift comes from proceeds raised at this year's Veterans Appreciation Dinner, hosted jointly by both clubs, and will support veterans in our community.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the dinner and helped make this possible, and to Post #94 for all you do for local veterans.

What a day at the 17th annual Rotary Popcorn Open! ⛳ Thank you to everyone who came out yesterday to support Shirley Heinze Land Trust. Your presence on the course made this event possible.

Shirley Heinze Land Trust preserves more than 4,000 acres across Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Starke, Marshall and St. Joseph counties, caring for that land for nature, for people and for open space. Proceeds from this year's tournament will go toward new stewardship facilities at Meadowbrook Nature Preserve right here in Valparaiso.

None of this happens without our sponsors. A huge thank you to all for backing this event and this cause.

Thank you to Mayor Austin Bonta for your presentation today on the Portage Library Garden and the Porter County Public Library System. Was great to see everyone!

I greatly appreciate the Rotary Club of Valparaiso for holding their latest meeting here in our Portage Library Garden this afternoon, and thankful for the team at our Portage Library Branch of our Porter County Library system for hosting such a wonderful event here today.

It was an honor to speak with attendees on a range of important topics, including our city's recovery process after this month's derecho, our efforts to build up our downtown through various kinds of events and city programs, upcoming infrastructure projects, and the importance of our public libraries in the movement to preserve and continue building our local communities.

Talking with the Rotarians, I learned that they came from all corners of Porter County, and it was very cool to meet many with existing connections to our city, as well as others who are increasingly interested in our city as a place to come explore, from our parks and beaches to new places to eat and shop very soon. Not to mention come and check out our incredible library.

Great meeting today! We heard from John J. Vode, author and professor at Purdue University Northwest, who spoke on the human side of AI. His big takeaway: "People have to come first."

We also celebrated Julian Campos, a recent grad and Rotary scholarship recipient, who's headed to Indiana University this fall to study business. Congrats, Julian, we can't wait to see what you do next. 🚀
