Salt Creek tiger beetles are one of Nebraska’s most remarkable insects—and one of its rarest. Found only along the salty mudflats of Salt Creek near Lincoln, these fast-running beetles depend on highly saline soils that few other species can tolerate.

Their striking metallic green bodies and long legs make them fierce little predators, chasing down smaller insects in the heat of summer. Because their habitat is so limited and easily disturbed, Salt Creek tiger beetles are federally endangered, making the protection of Nebraska’s saline wetlands critical to their survival.

Feeling cute, might pick up trash later 💁‍♂️

Last week, our LPSNRD staff rolled up their sleeves and spent time cleaning up Whitehead Saline Wetland. Together, we were able to gather a literal truck-load of trash.

Wetlands are critical for wildlife, water quality, and flood control, but they can’t do their job if they’re filled with litter. Let’s keep them clean, together! 💚
