Passing of Life Member Joan E. Adams

The Second District Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad announces with sadness the passing of Life Member Joan E. Adams on Monday, May 11, 2026. Joan’s life was marked by dedicated service to others.

Joan began her affiliation with the department in the 1960s as a member of what was then the Ladies Auxiliary. She held multiple leadership positions in that organization, including President in 1969-1970.

When the Rescue Squad was incorporated into the department in 1973, Joan became a Charter Member. She and her late husband, Past President and Past Chief James G. Adams, graduated as Emergency Medical Technicians following the class held at Valley Lee in 1973-1974. Over 29 years of service, Joan held a variety of officer positions within the department and received several awards for her performance and response to incidents.

Joan was also a Charter Member when the St. Mary’s County Advanced Life Support Unit was formed in the early 1980s, and she was a graduate of the first Cardiac Rescue Technician course offered in St. Mary’s County.

Along with her volunteer work and raising a family, Joan pursued professional studies and became a registered nurse.

The Adams family is in the thoughts of the community during this difficult time. Funeral arrangements will be announced as they become available.

SDVFD&RS Elects to go to Solar Power

The Second District Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad (SDVFD&RS) has entered a contract with the local solar energy firm, Energy Select to install a ground mounted solar energy system! Energy Select, located in Leonardtown MD, will install a 300 kW system for the Department consisting of 700 plus solar panels. It will be located primarily on the Department’s land located South of our new Fire/EMS station with additional panels as required between the new and the old stations.

The system will be sized to meet (averaged over the year) all our electrical needs. We are proud of this fiscally responsible investment of company funds which will save us significant energy costs for decades into the future.

This system, with a payback period of under six years, is affordable due to a generous community member donation of one hundred thousand dollars, a state grant of one hundred thousand dollars, and Federal refund opportunities. We are grateful for the continued and generous support of the community, the St. Mary’s County Commissioners, and Delegate Todd Morgan who sponsored our MD grant.

Though we are now on contract, the community won’t see installation operations for several months to come. Construction is expected to be completed in 2027.
